    Intel to Acquire Havok

Intel appears to be acquiring the company which supplies the physics API to many games on the market... this is an interesting turn of events considering the rumors going around Larabee....

Oh dear...this could be good or bad...
"To exist in this vast universe for a speck of time is the great gift of life. Our tiny sliver of time is our gift of life. It is our only life. The universe will go on, indifferent to our brief existence, but while we are here we touch not just part of that vastness, but also the lives around us. Life is the gift each of us has been given. Each life is our own and no one else's. It is precious beyond all counting. It is the greatest value we have. Cherish it for what it truly is."

hmm I like the idea of having the cpu with it's own physics core(s) built in.

Yeah, it could be good or bad....

Having looked at the behavior of Bioshock, Havoc is currently defaulted to 2 threads (see Bioshocks config ini files), if Intel plays dirty (which has been known to happen), they could cripple the software based physics API on multicores to run poorly on AMD equipment ... that would be bad

    thats nice!!!

no more Ageia PhysX crap! Instead a "native" one inside the processor... maybe Nehalem will have this feature

I think they are going to make Havok make heavy use of SSE4

Yea now instead of buying a dedicated physx card you now have to upgrade your CPU and possibly your chipset.

Once it is a native part of the processor, you will stop to worry about a card.
And at the time Nehalem become retail, my hardware will be old and slow. Just in time to buy another rig

maybe if they release a 32 core cpu, we can have decent physics in games from the cpu!

Id still rather buy a pci card than a cpu/chipset, its alot cheaper.

no it hasn't.. I'm talking about having cores that only do physics.

QMFT! Nehalem might have a 1600MHz FSB LOL! Then the higher end model will ship with CSI. So old motherboard are out anyway. Only the budget model might ship with the MC on the North-bridge.

For that we should thank BOTH (AMD and Intel) companies!

there yo go bringing intel into a amd thread again lol, if that was someone droping a dig at amd you would be crying like a girl.

if you are building a new computer, you have to buy a cpu and chipset anyways.... right? so in that case it would be cheaper then to have to buy an additional graphics/physics card. i think larabee will be for pcie 2.0 though

i would imagin that this is for intels terascale (larabee) project. they could allow 10 or 15 cores to work on physics and the others to work on graphics (or whatever).

I've seen a lot of things where more CPU cores outperform physX...

who cares if it's dedicated or not, we just need it to do the job and in this day and age of core multiplication I don't think that we'll be running short on hardware threads for a bit.

Nah, all Nehalem parts will use CSI (now known as Intel Quickpath) regardless of where the MC resides.

very interesting. this could lead to some incredible optimizations as well as further development in 3d animation.

Cool, thanks for the info, but the point still stands, we'll need new motherboards.

Thats it, I now officially regret ever buying an intel product.

    why bad thing ?

intel have success and money, if they want to buy something let them do it

when you want to buy something is another person forbidding you ? no, so let intel buy what they want

they produce good things, so customer 'll always have good cpus

am not in america, but everybody knows the american way of live, the american dream etc... in america when you have lot of money you buy what you want, right ? so intel can do the same ( yes this is very schematic )
