What PSU do you have? The X1950 is gonna pull more juice than the 9800 so it could be causing power issues.

Seconded. I had no end of problems going from a 9800xt to an x1950pro until I got a shiny new 450W psu.

    PSU is prolly the problem.

The universe will go on, indifferent to our brief existence, but while we are here we touch not just part of that vastness, but also the lives around us. Life is the gift each of us has been given. Each life is our own and no one else's. It is precious beyond all counting. It is the greatest value we have. Cherish it for what it truly is."

You may have corrupted your HDD while instability occurred due to overstressing the PSU. That would be a good explanation why the computer still feels slow after putting back the old card.

It has just 15A continues on the +12v line which is very low for a 475W unit. This may causes your issues. You should at least get a PSU with 20a continues on the +12v line. A good brand 380W+ PSU should be fine

Yeah you definitely need a better PSU. A Xclio GoodPower 500W can be had for ~$50.

ticking is usually a mechanical failure of some sort. I'm concluding what everyone else is too. PSU supplying insufficient power to the hard drive, potentially damaging it, causing your computer to slow down. X1900 series cards are big power consumers.

the ticking sound has to be a mechanical failure. back it up and RMA if you can. If it was a sector problem, you could probably do a low level format and just zero the drive, but I'm guessing that's not the problem. Try unplugging the 5 case fans. Get a personal fan and blow it into your computer instead (actually, this is really efficient and provides great airflow). Get rid of 1 (or both) dvd drives. See if you can cut load to the power supply.

yeah. my mom's drive lasted for about 7 years. Western digital has some pretty good life times too . made this loud ticking noise right before it died poor guy. I've got him in a box with a bunch of old hard drives now. Got it back when 100Gb was awesome and the P4 1.8ghz was second fastest on the market, lol.
