is 2 gig of ram beneficial?

or is 2 gigs redundant on an WinXP system? also, you think the system will have the same clocking capabilities with all the banks filled (both "dual channels" bein used) as opposed to just 2? thinkin of goin 2 gig ocz 3500 platinum instead of 512 of ocz 3700 golds. thanx guys.

no matter how much memory you have, winxp will always say thank you and take the half away from you and use it fro some crap.

more memory modules mean more work for the nb i think, might give you 10mhz lower fsb speeds... and 512mb modules oc worse, because a stick of ram only ocs to where the worst memory chip of the stick still works ok. the more memory chips the ram has the lower the possibility that you get a high oc. 512mb sticks oc 10mhz lower than 128mb sticks.

if you dont use heavvy rendering apps or server stuff you really wnt see a difference with 2gb. even 1gb wont help you in games.

Hollywood 2g would be a big wast of money unless its in a server or a very heavy graphics work station. you will see very little increase in performance if any over 1g.

Edit: and it wont oc as well as 256mb sticks or 512mb sticks

    cool

thanx guys. so how does 4 stix of 256 sound? from what u've said i gather that this way would be better than 2 stix of 512. now my other question is, since one stick oc's better than 2, do 2 banks (2 stix) oc better than 4? anyone tried runnin with all their banks filled?

I would get 2 sticks of 512mb, 256mb sticks oc better but I wouldn't count on 4 of them in a system all being able to OC well plus the memory controler wouldn't OC as well either.

For CAD it would possibly make a difference however what are you planningas rest of spec? 2GB of RAM with a Athlon XP 2000+ aint gonna be greta, be better with SMP especilaly ofr CAD, if games 512 plenty, Win xp sucks fisher price stupid OS

    less ram=less problems.

I wish they made 128 meg sticks of DDR3500 kingston...
I like having less then more.

hmmm, i figured sumfin would be fishy with 4 stix as i haven't seen too many people clockin systems with all the banks filled. thanx for clearin that up. now comes another question: do you think i'd have a hard time clockin with two 512 ocz golds (not optimized for dual channel) or should i got with a 1gig kit of ocz 3500 platinums?

Memory like most things around here, is a topic of endless debate !!!! everone has an opion (some unfounded !) based on there own experiences with different memory. I personally like corsair XMS series, it seems to work well on both intel and amd systems. Kingston HyperX also is a favorite choice and I rarely see any problems posted about it that cann't be contributed to user error.

I would do a search for the memory your thinking about and read up on other posts.

The new OCZ Gold is suppose to be some frekin high clocking, low voltage stuff, but does so a loose timings. I am going to get a couple of sticks myself to try out in a couple of weeks.

but how much worse is it if i pare up 2 sticks of memory that wasn't "optimized" for dual channel rather than gettin "optimized for dual channel"? reason being is that ocz doesn't make a 1gig dual channel 3700 gold (yet at least) and i was wondering if i can just pare up the "non-optimized" 512 sticks. what do u think? (just using ocz cos i'm partial to it, been usin it for a while, but speaking of memory in general in this type of config)

I personally think the whole dual channel kit deal is just a marketing gimic. I'm sure they do actually test the sticks together but as long as you buy them at the same time from the same vendor they should work fine together.

you see, they make different revisions of the memory, and sometimes they change minor things, so two sticks of the same memory but different revisions might not run 100% the same and cause probs in dual channel.

if you buy 2 sticks of ram in the same shop on the same day, the chance that you get 100% exact memory sticks is 99.99%...

so i wouldnt worry about that. i dont think that there will be any probs with ocz in dual channel, and yeah ive heard it ocs great... some people seem to have probs with it, but i think there were just some bios settings on 875 boards they had to change.

Kingston is total §§§§, my 256MB Kingston won't go as far as my really cheap twinmos 512MB and Kingston's are way overpriced.
