On something like a pentium 1 or a K6, it would slowly get hotter and hotter. On something like a High end X2/PD/C2D, the core would reach 100+*C in a matter of seconds, give you 3rd degree burns, and probably burn up, unless it has really fast acting thermal shutdown

Well, If he said that it can run without a heatsink...... I would at least take a temp reading first.

your system will shut down until anything serious will happen. I've run my 1700+ without a heatsink a number of times and it survived (until I shot it with a BB gun)

    K6 or Prescott, burn
K8 or conroe with low voltage, nothing

I think touching your PSU's capacitors while it's running is much more exhilarating.

ok, something tells me ppl arent following whats going on, so i will clarify:

I have a Core Solo that has been modded so that it runs @ a mere 1GHZ... the person i bought it of says it can run without a heatsink (thus a clue as to how cool it runs)... so pretty much i could buy the appropriate mobo, plug in the CPU, turn it on & SEE the actual die running... so i was thinking, just for s & giggles, y not touch it?

lol. well, if you want... as long as you don't damage the core, it should be fine. cores can take a little bit, but not much. Almost all graphic cards just have direct heatsink to die setups and I've touched the die, nothing special
