Dropping a little in output

I had one major row with my parents yesterday

Parents were complaining after we used 40kWh on the LAN. They asked whose systems used so much power. My 8 rigs of course. I told them my systems were 10 times more efficient than theirs (my average northwood system consumes ~60W), but the fact I was using 500-700W in my room got them a 'little' angry. They didn't believe me when I told them I was using that power only a few months ago with a single system and dual monitors.
All of my crunchers have been moved from my room, except the main rig and my lappy. They'll be back in a few weeks I think, but until that moment I'll only have a Celly 420 and P3 850Mobile running. Oh well, that problem should be over when I get my quad. I might get a QX6700 and dual 8800GTXs just to tease them
Main rig:
CPU: I7 920C0 @ 3.6Ghz (180*20)
Mobo: DFI UT X58 T3eH8
RAM: 12GB OCZ DDR3-1600 Platinum
GPU/LCD: GeForce GTX280 + GeForce 8600GTS (Quad LCDs)
Intel X25-M G2 80GB, 12TB storage
PSU/Case: Corsair AX850, Silverstone TJ07

Parents: They just don't have a sense of humor!
All they see is 8 machines and their elec bill.
It's understandable I guess. Patience with them and good luck!

Heres a stategy. GO out and buy a load of space heaters. Hide them in your mothers part of the warddrobe. Then go to daddy. Say 'Hey I found all these in Mammys closet... wow...'

Divide and conquer my friend.

Most parents don't like to pay high bills. Of course, I wouldn't like too if I were a parent.

Well, that's the problem I guess... My parents don't see the use of me running those programs, no matter what I tell them, yet it was my father who got me into this? I tell them all the time that you can either save money and send it to a charity, or do this and do some actual research yourself. All they want to see is some crazy power bill.

I have been fiddling with my systems for ages, getting the last bit of energy saved. Most of my northwoods run on boxed Intel P3 coolers, loading 50-60C on average. Is this what I'm getting in return?
I guess it's time I'm going to show them how much the vacuum (600W), washing machine (1200W), tumble dryer (1400W), dishwasher (1500W) and their pc's (250W avg x4) use... It might not look like it from my power consumption, but since the D820/19" CRT was sold, I managed to run 8 rigs (avg. northwood 2.4) with only ~600W... They don't understand that I'm at least trying to lower my power consumption... I've totally had it now, they don't want to understand? OK, so be it. I'm not paying attention to my power consumption any more.

One thing is for sure: I'm not getting a second, energy efficient cruncher after I've worked in the holidays, but one, big, fat 24" LCD like I've always wanted. They've been pissing me off for too long now...

<<<<<<<< Word up! Me wants one, too.

But it is hard to justify. My mind says "man, that'd pay for this mobo, or that PSU ( or both ) or that cooler, etc."

But I do, indeed have lust in my heart! LOL

Ahhh to live at home and have mummy and daddy pay the bills...those were the days.

You should pay the the extra kWh yourself...then you can run what you want.

That will be too expensive for me, with 50-100kWh/month @ .40 cents/kWh. I already told them I was willing to chip in a little, but they didn't want it. They thought I had to use my money for more useful stuff. No problem to me

Oh - my parents started having a rant the other day about power consumption, to which I just said I would pay the excess on the power bill, which it would seem is only about £4.86 from when I wasnt crunching to now. They will soon get over it when you just put your PCs on and ignore their pleas to turn off your computers.

Crunching:
Main Rig: Dual Opty 2536s, SM H8DA8-2, 6gb DDR2 ECC
Pentium Dual Core E2180 2.0GHz, 2GB PC5400.
HTPC - Core 2 Duo T7200 @ 1.6, 1GB DDR2, Philips HDTV
Pentium 4 3.0E @ 3.8GHz, 1GB Ballistix PC4000
1.0GHz Pentium !!! 384MB PC133
Apple MacBook Pro 2.4GHz, 4GB 667MHz.
Pentium D820, 2GB DDR2, 1TB Hard Drive.

How much points/day does your machine produce?
And how much power does it use? Doesn't look very efficient to me

Oh, I found a new way... Pre-configured boot in the bios... starts up at 0:30 and shuts down with a tool at 6am. Should be good for a few months .
