I thought only liquids evaporated? If they are talking about an external coating on something that contains water (as in a rad ) them they are talking out of their behinds?

i did a quick google search onit wich gave em a french site.

Hwlabs are about to announce the exit of a new generation of cooler, range RXN. Eh yes, it is not a question that of radiator, but of a cooling couple + radiator. In fact, even if Hwlabs do not specify it, the RXN will be a ventirad and a radiator whose technology will be based on the thermosiphon. Approximately, that will resemble Vapochill Micro, but much more powerful. RXN means RE/AXION. I have hearing statement of one 0.11 C/W. One awaits more infos soon...

no way thats a computer-generated figure. Why go through the trouble of buying a model? Its probably a stock photo that has been heavily treated.

im trying to guess if its this. I kinda stumbled upon it when trying to prove a fact.

"many aircraft manufacturers tried to use evaporative cooling systems which used water at high pressure. "

    Thats from wiki:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethylene_glycol

But it also talks about how big these machines were. However, with today's technology, and the fact your trying to only disapate a much smaller heat source. Could this possibly be what there talking about?

Plenty of info out there on this technique as it's already in use in many industry sectors. Only new to the PC Watercooling scene.

    I still don't understand.

What, exactly, is evaporating here? There is no benefit to some enhanced evaporative surface unless there is a liquid of some kind that's evaporating.

If liquid is evaporating, then who's supplying the constant fresh stream of new liquid to evaporate?

If no liquid is evaporating, then what's the point?

To have a high critical flux and a low superheat at the base of a thermosyphon, we need a very good designed surface to enhance boiling efficiency. Typically, porous/microstructured surfaces are used for that purpose.

S'got me baffled as to how they've implemented it too d00d... I'm coming to the conclusion that the evaporative coating isn't being used to that effect. That's just the name of the coating, but not the job that it's actually doing. I think it's just to increase water > metal contact area... a metal sponge so to speak possibly - everywhere I read about these coatings they're described as "microporous"... have seen experimentations done with wire-wool jammed into a finned metal tube which exhibited a degree of improved cooling over the finned tube alone... *shrug*

If it's a coating, is it on the inside, the outside, or both?

If it's micro-porous and on the inside, then that sounds to me much like a wet-suit. It'd be trapping water-molecules in a non-evaporative system, creating an effective insulation, instead of the desired effect. For evaporation, micro-porous is exactly what you want, provided that the heat-source is attached to the metal driving the evaporation. For a fully submersed system where we're on the heat-sink side, it'd be detrimental.

As for steel wool in a finned tube, that makes perfect sense. Greater turbulation of the flow, plus an increased flow velocity due to added restriction. It's like the age-old rule of making water-blocks better. Add restriction where it's needed...
