That E2160 performs about as good as my E6850 in SuperPI... Very nice, I thought about buying some of those chips to experiment with....

After my sour E2160 L2 which clocked at 9x375, and my lemon sour Q6600 G0 which maxes out at 3.42Ghz stable, I have to upgrade another machine, so I bought a E2180 (They didn't have any E2140's and E2160's in stock).

Me: You got any E2180's in stock?
    Sales: Yeah
Me: I'll have one....... hmmmmm how many you have in stock?
    Sales: 4 in stock
Me: ok bring them all out, I want to pick one
Sales: Why why why? Why you want to pick? You got special one you like?
Me: Yeah I like ones with certain numbers on it.
    Sales: Sigh...... ok.

last 3 digits on the chip: 254

    Gigabyte GA-P31-S3G
    RamBo DDR2-800 5-5-5-15
    Cooling: Q6600 G0 stock cooler.
    PSU: Thermaltake 430w

Auto setting on everything, Crunching 100% on both cores + installing WoW at the same time (More OCCT Stable results to come later)

I really like these CPU's too bad they get pretty hot, my E2140 at 3ghz only got up to 60°C under a light watercooling( but it's understandable as if I could run my Q6600 at +4ghz...it woudl be scorching hot too), really good bang for the buck, though for my own rig I prefer something with more cache....
Question : Why do some overclockers switch into d*ckmode when money is involved

Remark : They call me Pro Asus Saaya yupp, I agree

    wow very nice!

Out of the box my 2160 did 3ghz stock voltages..stock settings...

But now i'm running into a wall at 3.3ghz... Orthos fails around 2 1/2hours of running.. temp is 59'C under orthos..... doesn't seem to be stable over 3.3ghz nomatter how much voltage i throw at it

    E2160 SLA8Z M0 stepping
Gigabyte P35 DS3L <------ not my first choice mobo i wanted $88 but it was way cheaper then the rest

Crucial Ballistix Tracer 4x1GB ( i will prolly pull out 2 sticks and see is i can go higher with just 2x1gb sticks in the system)

    Thermalright 120 xtreme Lapped

I do have another E2160 getting shipped on its way to me now(just had to buy another one for $69)

The GA-P35-DS3L is a good board, better than my P5K SE, these chips seems to be limited to around 3.2Ghz so I think that's the limitation of your chip (My old E2160 is around 3.34Ghz max too and reaches 3Ghz on auto everything, but after 3Ghz it needed massive amount of voltage, end up using 1.575 for 3.34Ghz), but this new E2180 I got it seems to be a gem, crap cooler and it reaches 3.2 without even trying. (Finally, after years of crap chips).

$88 for a P35-DS3L is a great price, for $88 you can't even get a P5K-SE which is the cheapest P35 there is.

So far I get to 3.15Ghz bench stable and 3Ghz Orhtos blend stable with everything on auto and the stock cooler with my E2180. These are amazing chips. I've only had mine a week and haven't really pushed it.

Also loving the ASUS P5N32-e SLI Plus. Had grand plans for a monster SLI setup and an expensive proc, but ran out of money Still, 7600GT SLI and E2180 is yielding some nice results... Can't wait to get a TRUE-120...

All this hype about the X35/X38 and Q6600... Pretty happy with the setup, but considering an E8400 next...

Cool thanks for the feed back man ..appericate it! I've been away and out of the scene (OC'ing & PC's) for like 3-4 years(last system i OC'd was a p4 northwood)... just getting back into..i didn't forget everything i pervisouly knew..but i can't recall all of it(if you don't use it you lose it)

I'm not b inching or ranting about the P35 DS3L mobo.. its a good board... it just wasn't my first choice...but for $88 bucks i made it my choice.I remember back in the Nforce2 days and Pre NF2 days that a pricey mobo was in the $200 to mid $250 range.... and now holy hell in a hambasket! boards are in the $300-$400(thats raping peeps)which i think is outrageous.Tho it is good to see some of the manufacture's designing/making hardware for OC'ing(or more OC'ing friendly) which is great to see. But atleast RAM is dirt cheap right now.

I will be putting together another system in the coming weeks...prolly a q6600 and a DFI mobo ..or something like that

Wow! Stock cooler! The stock cooler looks so pathetic I didn't even bother cooling anything with it. Here's a comparison of the stock E2180 M0 to E2160 L2. Another example of intel cutting cost.

    Left: E2180 M0
    Right: E2160 L2

The E2180 M0's fan is a lot bigger, I guess it's cheaper to put more plastic on a fan, than putting more Aluminium on a heatsink. Note the fins are now facing the other way to be more in contact with the airflow.

    Which revision do you have?

I bought 2 cpu, 2160, one for me, one for my brother. Since he doesn't need more than a type machine, any extra mhz is not important and I could pick the most overclocable to me.

I got one M0 and one L2. Test both on a P35C-DS3R. Stock cooler
    CoreTemp 0.95.4
    Prime 95 on both cores

    L2 straight to 9x370 ( just tested boot); 300 on a g31 chipset.
    M0 got 9x350 but with 1,4v.

    M0 is near 60şC on full load 1,4v 9x350
L2 is arround 50şC, 70-75 on full load even at stock speed and voltage!!!!

I tried to search arround and there are other reports about the same issue.

Is anyone aware of this temperature problem?

Here's my little tiger in action:
8x400 (don't mind Orthos, it's reading it wrong) at 1,3V in BIOS and the measured voltage shown in the pic:

When I'll have some free time (I'm in exams right now) I'll take it out of the case, put it on the table, put a jacket on and open the window (or turn the AC to max if it gets any hotter here) and push it for max on air.
I tried 3,6GHz but it got too hot and throttled during Orthos. It went all the way up to 80+ degrees Celsius with the mainboard at 70 degrees.

would anyone be kind enough to tell me what would be better for OCing between the 2140 and the 2160 on an MSI Neo2-fr board? i was thinking the higher multiplier would be better, but then does it really make that mcuh of a difference?

^ your english is cool .

@clon22: thanks... i wanna follow this Tom's Hardware guide to OC, but then i heard the MSI board can OC easy just by setting the board to 333fsb... so, what do you say... (i'm nto sure if that makes a load of sense...)

Did some tests today... took the whole thing out of the case, put it near the window, opened the window... and then I began.

Same settings as when in the case:
    IDLE:

    FULL LOAD:

The 3600MHz I was talking about:

After I put it back in the case I saw that the temps went down a bit for whatever reason (I didn't even remount the cooler, just lifted the board with the whole thing and put it back together the same way). So I decided to go a bit further than my previous settings:

    3400 FULL LOAD:

And a SuperPI with it at 3400:

Didn't want to test over 3600MHz as the temps were going crazy high and I had a feeling my PSU was nearing it's limits as well (Thermaltake 500W with two rails on the 12V => less amps).
I'm positive that with a good board and a good PSU this chip can hit 4GHz under water and maybe more in sub zero. I think I'll go for max FSB tomorrow and see where's this little fella's FSB wall.

PS: Isn't this an amazing chip for just 75$ ??

EDIT: Just remembered... Does anyone know why my board says in the BIOS that Normal VCore is 1.175 ?

my e2140 does 430fsb on air without breakin into a sweat (atleast the cpu didnt break into one )

i have crappy jet-ram that refuses to go over that though!

but considering the fact that it does 3.46Ghz on 1.39v, im guessing theres lots more to come!

oh, an supPI gets to about 17.7s so its pretty neat and nothing's too hot (max load temps after 4 hours of orthos 56-57)

will push further when i can get atleast 800mhz modules
