The sound problem is very common.

I have used / worked with @ least 30 Vista loaded machined and all had some sort of sound issue.

Mainly Dell laptops have a horrible sound cracking problem.

I also experience the same with my monster E6600 / P5K deluxe when downloading @ fulll speed or when loading too much to the memory.

    I don't use Vista, I use XP.

It seems to happen sometimes when the CPU is stressed. But it's not consistent.

For example, Serious Sam 2 exhibits the problem, where as GRAW and VT3 don't.

Sometimes when I'm installing things it happens too. I might just try reinstalling the drivers, actually.

Eva2000, as you are the memory guru I have a question for you - Crucial Ballistix 8500 - would you recommend this as the best memory today to go with Asus P5k Deluxe?
How about running this in 4GB configuration?

basically I am looking at what memory to get for this motherboard.

crucial ballistix best 5-5-5-x clocking ram but 4-4-4-x on latest batches seem to fall around 525-550mhz

4x1GB haven't tried crucial ballistix 8500 yet takes a long time to properly test 4x1GB..

I think eva's is not in a case.

I'm only using a 50x50x15mm fan. I wasn't sure I could secure a 60mm fan. I figured the best way to secure a fan on the NB would be with tape so I went looking for some tape that would stick under temperature. The best that I could find is advertised as Hi-Temp/Hi-Strength Supermount Tape. It's double-sided but I'm using only one side. It's made by 3M for RadioShack but you'd probably have to find something similar at another retailer. Here's a link that shows the tape that I used:

    http://www.radioshack.com/product/in...entPage=search

It comes in strips of 3 inches (7.5cm) in length by 1 inch (2.5cm) wide. I made 4 pieces by cutting two strips in half length wise and then cutting them to a length that I estimated that I needed. I put the 4 pieces of tape on the fan as in the photo, positioned the fan up against the NB and pressed the tape down snug. It took me a couple of times to get it right. The first time I had it perfect except that I forgot to check the direction it was blowing. I can confirm this tape is super stick! This is the best photo I could get.

This 50mm 17cfm fan reduced my MB temp by about 5c. If you use tape to secure a fan then get back with your results. I just might buy a 60mm fan to see if it will lower it some more.

Anyone having problems with the JMicron controller and Vista X64?
If I enable it, my computer becomes very unstable and often cannot start up.
The JMicron drivers I downloaded from the Asus website seem to be corrupt as all the files are gibberish (Readme, the .INF that usually contain readable text).

I don't want to buy new SATA optical drives. :\

Info that would help: I was using an Asus P5WDH prior to this board, and at one point used the JMicron controller on that one to switch to AHCI mode. If they are different models, drivers shouldn't be a problem correct? And if they are the same, there shouldn't be a problem.. hmm.

    EDIT:

    I think I fixed it.

    1. Disabled JMicron controller in BIOS, leave SATA in AHCI mode. Make sure Windows boots without problem. Create a restore point.
    2. Copy driver from P5K CD from my laptop over network to my desktop.
    3. Enable JMicron controller in BIOS on AHCI mode.
    4. Boot into Safe Mode
    5. Install JMicron driver
    6. Reboot to normal mode

System has been stress testing for about 15 minutes, no weird crashes, no "hiccups" (random momentary system freezes).

I was going to try one of those Zalman mounts and hang a fan over the NB, but the combination of my 8800 GTX and Ultra 120 isn't letting me mount the bracket in a place I can use. Maybe I'll just make this really ugly and electrical tape down an 80 mm fan on the backside of my 8800 and aim it at the NB.

no case so fan just sits on NB heh

but i changed it to 120x25mm fan that covers memory modules to now see first couple of photos at http://i4memory.com/showthread.php?t=4119

You can solve this problem by using Antec's Spot Cooler. Pretty useful in my case. No worry of hanging/tying fans around or fan accidently dropping and cutting wires, damaging other components, etc.

why not just use the biggest fan you can find? I'm currently on air but I will be going back to water after I finish modding my case.

I'm testing 4x1GB on the P5K Deluxe right now. I'll post results when my testing wraps up.

    Just a teaser tho... I'm currently stress-testing 4x1 @ 5-5-5-15, @ 1130Mhz, 2.15 v . Not sure if it's stable yet, but I've got about 5 loops of memtest sofar.

Note that this is with Static Read Control DISABLED. This takes away about 200-300 MB of bandwidth per memtest's reading, but allows me to clock quite a bit higher. I haven't tested the impact in real-world apps yet.

The P5KD 0403 bios is up on

    ftp://ftp.asus.com.tw/pub/ASUS/mb/so.../P5K%20Deluxe/

I successfully flashed to 0403 from 0311. On the initial boot I had a check sum F1 message but all the boots since have been successful after I set my defaults.

The one change that I've noticed is on the JumperFree Configurations page. I believe it's the much awaited option:

at this point, the strap setting doesn't mean much. in the past, you had to exceed 290fsb or something to get access to all the dividers iirc. now, you get to choose the dividers that belong to a particular strap depending on what you set. so it doesn't make too much of a difference. if you want 1:1, you'll have to pick 333strap

    Flashing now.

EDIT: I flashed it, if only my ram would do DDR2 1200 4-4-4-12 I would be golden, 266 strap on 500fsb has a min of 1250mhz

It will post DDR2 1250 5-5-5-15 with crap subtimings.
