My Q6600 just isn't dropping in!

I can't figure this out, I've got a brand new Q6600 and a brand new IP35 pro mobo.

Problem is, the CPU just flat out isn't wanting to drop in to the socket! Here are some high res pics (click "view original size), tell me if you see something I'm missing.

http://allyoucanupload.webshots.com/...72009833971119 Do those holes look normal?

http://allyoucanupload.webshots.com/...24860301892694 Here you see how high it is lifted just sitting there
http://allyoucanupload.webshots.com/...93072762648268 Here you see the cover not fitting over the socket

Unfortunately I don't have another LG775 CPU to test

Looks like it isn't oriented correctly...try rotating it 90° counterclockwise as per your third picture.

It's kind of hard to tell though.

Isn't it in in the last pic? What do you mean by doesn't want to drop in? To lock the socket, there will be resistance when pushing the clip down....is that what you mean?

Sorry if I sound like I'm treating you as a n00b...I'm not. I just can't seem to quite get what you're trying to say

The CPU is oriented fine, you're just being too cautious. When installing LGA775 CPUs, you will need to put a fair bit of pressure on that metal lever to get it locked down properly. It's normal Just make sure the notches on the side line up with the notches in the socket (it's pretty obvious when they do) and you're right.

Ah, your right souls, I can't believe how much pressure it needed... not used to having to do that

It's Intel's way of making sure their CPUs are used by manly geeks. Hrurgh!

Yeah the last picture looks like it is in right. Just lower the lever and mount the heatsink and everything should go fine.

Souls is right, when I first got my LGA775 right I was scared because I had to put quite a lot of pressure on the metal bracket to close it, but it is normal. It isn't like 939 where you could just drop the processor in and that was it.

Was totally thinking the same thing. I too thought that "this can't be right" when closing the lid down on the processor. But sure enough it fired right up the first time. It did have me sweating for a bit until i was done putting it together though. Since then i have lapped and reseated a few times trying to find optimal temps.

Yup... You really can only mount it one way if you have any common sense at all. I think in order to mount it backwards you would need to be retarded.

I actually felt the same way about my firt 775 CPU.

I didn't really want to push that lever down and sat there for a little while thinking "What the hell Am I doing wrong here?"

I also remember the first time I pulled a CPU cooler up and the CPU came out of the socket with it!

EXACTLY. I ripped a socket 754 3000+ right out of the socket with the heatsink before. Scared the hell outta me. Fortunately none of the pins were bent. I kinda like the 775 design in that you can't possibly rip the CPU out of the socket. That's the only thing i CAN say that's nice about it though.

i do get a bit worried about screwing on the tuniq...now there 's some pressure.

i do wonder tho' just how much pressure it wood take to partially crush an itel cpu and or socket

I think the mobo would break first... I had a P5B Deluxe with a Thermaltake water block.... I tighten the screws so hard that the mobo warped around the socket area, you could almost see a dome when you looked @ the back of the mobo... it still worked fine, eventually, the board unwarped itself over time.
