inf modding for laptop, help please (nvidia)

    Hi all.

I thought I would update my Nvidia drivers as I have some problems with TOCA3 and newer drivers are supposed to help.

I downloaded the 165.01 drivers but laptop GPU's are not supported.

In the past I have downloaded a modded inf from laptopvideo2go but there forum is down as a HDD died

I tried modding the inf myself adding these lines -

    %NVIDIA_G72.DEV_01D7.1% = nv_NV3x, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_01D7
    and
    NVIDIA_G72.DEV_01D7.1 = "NVIDIA GeForce Go 7300"

With these lines added I could install the driver and it seemed to work ok, appart from damned TOCA3 crashes to desktop when I load it.

I got a big performance gain from these drivers in other games, they just wont work with TOCA3. TOCA does work when I roll back the driver.

Problem is that im I dont really know what im doing modding these INF files so is there anything else I should do to get them compatible with the 7300go ?

People on laptopvideo2go had them working with the 7300go but I cant get there Inf file untill there forum is back up.
Plus I would like to learn a bit mroe about how the drivers work anyway.

    Im using vista 32bit

Any ideas, all help greatly appreciated.

You might be able to install the drivers without the inf mod by going through the control panel and device manager then selecting update drivers and forcing... I used some ATi Mobility drivers on non-mobility products this way for a while. No performance change, but aquamark wouldnt bench.

Alternately you may be able to use an inf from an older set of drivers.

    Thanks for the help.

To get the drivers to install I am allready forcing them using control panel and the "have disk" option.

Im not sure if using an older inf will work as I only have much much older driver versions, and the inf files look very different.

It looks like I will just have to play around a bit more.

Is there a site anywhere that explains how the inf works, i didnt find much info on google.

Downloading the newest set of mobile drivers and using their INF may work.

Problem is that Nvidia are no longer supporting laptops and are leaving it up to laptop manufacturers to provide the drivers.
Because of this the last orricial release I can find is vry old and the inf is totaly different.
If I try and use it it just says "cannot find file"

I still cant find much detailed info on HOW to mod inf files.

If thats the case i'd never buy an nVidia product again.. !

Might have to avoid swapping my x1800 mobile for an nV product now

    Yep, it totaly sucks.

Also I asked codemasters support for help with TOCA3 as I couldnt work out why it was locking up and they told me that laptops are not supported and that they wouldnt give me any help at all
Considerng how buggy TOCA3 is I wont be buying anything else from codemasters either

If the oppotunity arrises I will be swapping this 7300go for an ATI mobile card. This is the first Nvidia card I have owned since Grforce3, and it will probably be the last.
If you do decide to upgrade your x1800mobile send me a PM
I think x1800 will fit my laptop, and then all these driver problems will be gone.

With the inf files at laptop2go you can force newer drivers to work, but its not an ideal solution.
Also nvidia still have no SLI drivers at all for laptop chipsets under Vista, which is appauling IMO considering that M$ want to phase out XP entirely in the near future.

The laptop is a Acer Aspire 5633 and I think it takes MXM type II cards.

I might be able to mod the cooling to improove it when I get home.

X1800 needs MXM Type III connector... not sure if it'd work on a Type II connector..

Big heatsink required as well, Uniwill P72 chassis heatsink is too small really
