NVIDIA: There will be no 8800GS

The initial release notes for the NVIDIA ForceWare 158 Driver had a typo that referenced a product that does not, and will not exist. NVIDIA has no plans to release a GeForce 8800 GS. We have corrected the mistake and will be replacing the document on our website.

theres no logical place for a 8800 GS right now.

theres cards at the 199 and 299 mark already...

Yeah, the keywords there is what we all have noted. "Right Now" there is no place for it due to there price on the 8600GTS being overpriced.

If we only consider price. But if we consider performance...

Damn them. Damn them to Hell. There's no way I'll buy their 8600GTFO. And an
8800GTS is too expensive for me. I think I'll be better off with an x1950Pro.

Just wait for the 65nm shrink to come out for Higher to mid-high end range cards. That's my hope for the end of the year.

But definately dissappointed that Nvidia has brought out the weak sauce 8600 series and is not gonna have a solid GS card out.

If the XL ever actually comes about in a worthwhile time period. Who's to say it will come so much before the GT? Neither of them seem to be in the immediate cards from what we know; just the XT. Granted, logic says there should be something in the $300 spot between the 2600/2900. Logic also says there should be a part between the 8800GTS and 8600GTS, yet there isn't and apparently won't be for some time.

I just hope there is a low-end R600 512MB part with decent bandwidth (either by keeping the 512-bit bus or using high-binned mem) on par with the 8800gts 320mb. That seems like it will be the sweet spot for 16x12/16x10. If not, I will be very sad.
    That is all.

    Peace and love.

8800GS will be a sp reduced version (from 96sp to 80sp I guess)

    no need for that version

even the 8800GTS is beaten by X1900XT in the high res

    That's the 640MB version?

Damn, I thought it was better than that @ 16x12.

I guess that seems to be the breaking point between performance and high-end parts. <1600x1200 and 1600x1200 and greater. I wish it was 1600x1200 and below, and then greater than 1600x1200 for high-end.

Oh well. I guess I'll be waiting a while for that part to show up.
    That is all.

    Peace and love.

That's undoubtably the 320mb version. You can tell by the nose dive it takes at high rez. 320mb just isn't enough for high-rez gaming.

I keep getting mixed reports on these new G80s eliminating the perennial ATI Image Quality Crown. In my mind that is a HUGE seller but I have not seen much of this, anyone with some first hand knowledge care to humor me?

So what product plugs the hole? If ATi can capitalise on that... it may yet rescue their annoying delays.

And now I am faced with the battle of getting an X1950XT / 8800GTS320 for the same price. 512 vs 320 eh?
