Anandtech's Review of the Ultra 120 Extreme.

    http://www.anandtech.com/casecooling...oc.aspx?i=2943

Anandtech still rates the Tuniq 120 as the reigning champ of the aircooling world. Have they never used an enzo?

    Not really....

However, the best air cooler we have tested is the Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme. It cools better at all speeds and overclocks, and overclocks the processor further than any air CPU cooler we have tested.
Don't confuse their comments on the vanilla 120 with the 120E.

That's odd.. In the Anandtech review it clearly states it comes with all mounting hardware included (774, AM2, 939)....

That would be totally retarded... there are way too many 939 socket users out there and me being one of them.. they're going to exclude them for a 1$ bracket.. WTF....??!!
I held off my 120 purchase for the Extreme version but now it looks like they give me the finger... well I'll return the favor then....

that bracket is probably $1 at most COST. To buy it separately I bet it is more like $6+.

I too am using a Big Typhoon and wouldn't mind changing it for this as I know I could always reuse the cooler if I were to go with something else down the road.

I know this works for AM2 and C2D but would it work on the new AMD Barcelonas that are shipping this fall? I ask because I have looked too into its socket size/type etc. For the price and a little time changing it, it might be worth the effort. Every time I say I'm done with my computer something else comes up I want. This, plus the new 1TB Hitachi HD and of course the HD X2900. Sigh. I am suppose to be saving for a new car too.

That's what I meant... it can't cost them more then $1 to produce the damn bracket.... hell it's probably the same bracket as used for the regular Ultra so it's probably even cheaper....

Hardware sucks..... if you want to stay on top of the game that is.....

I wish someone would compare the coolers with a Kentsfield @ 1.5+ Vcore. That's what'll separate the men from the boys.

Anandtech still rates the Tuniq 120 as the reigning champ of the aircooling world. Have they never used an enzo?
No they don't read it again.

The 120 equals the Tuniq, or 1-2C better and the Ultra Extreme is a good 5C better.

All of you who are dissing on the BT , you should lap the hsf and lap your IHS and then see what kind of a cooler it really is. Thermaltake takes away from its efficiency by giving it a really crappy base and most IHS are not flat. It was good enough to keep my opteron 146 at 1.6V below 45C load after I lapped it and I popped the IHS off the opteron. And thats with the stock fan. Its a very good hsf for its price ,it just needs some effort on your part.

regardless TR 120 Extreme loooks like a really good hsf , however I HATE the nickel plated bottom that TR loves to give its hsf. We know its copper at the bottom , so why mess with the nickel and hinder its performance. I lapped my XP120 and it keeps by Dual Core 3600+ at 3ghz below 60C with a panaflo at 7V.

regarding the BT, mine was pretty flat and didnt need any lapping, but i can't imagine anyone needing to lap it since its tightened by nuts. if one side isnt as flat as the other, would'nt u just tighten the nuts on that side an intsy bit more? its not like this is a clip on heatsink w/ pushpins here.

I wonder when aircoolers will start bowing the bases....with high clamping pressure mounts, it'd really help a lot.

Anandtech used the high end model, the F variant. SF122F I believe the model is. 64cfm at 28dba, it really is to be quite quiet. I am looking to getting a couple of these for my case.

I don't know why but I have always preferred panaflo fans for my cpus.

On a slight off-topic note, what would be a good cooler for the northbridge on 680i, which wouldn't smack into the 120?

Aha, so it was the higher model. You're right, I had to look up the one I bought, the -E model, and that thing is pretty damn quiet. I'm sure the -F will be a tiny uptick in noise, I'm personally going to use the -E model on my Ultra-120e

Jab-tech now has it on their site, just ordered it, a Scythe -E fan, two yates for case fans.
