So how are you people who "gave up" on these chips getting 3500 mhz? What are you doing differently?

probably has to do with hardware burn-in its like breaking in a new pair of work boots, bump it up, stress it, then a day later bump it up again, rinse repeat till no longer stable

Received a E6420 L649G590 from TN Newegg last night.

Got 3.2 easy, above that needs lots of vcore. Managed to get ~450 - 455 FSB with 1.55v water cooled - doubt it's prime stable for long. Walls at 460 FSB. Not happy with it as my E6300 has no problems up to 515 Mhz. The FSB wall really pisses me off and the need for ridiculous vcore sux too.

    Any suggestions with this one?

    E6420 L649G590

    DDR2 1083

BIOS voltage 1.525v, vdroop pencil modded.

Still working on this one, needs more voltage that I expected, temps are still ok though. Watercooled, parts listed in my sig. My 6300 did about 3570 24/7, hoping to get close. 1M SuperPI 14.438 at this speed, my 6300 was a second and a half slower at 3570.

Man, that's freakin' impressive dnottis, have you ever heard where the CT and TAT programs were having difficulties reading cpu temps (of course I'm only referring to us air coolers )

Thanks, its not bad. TAT doesnt work in Vista 64, I actually prefer using Everest myself. Give that a shot. The only other thing I would imagine it could be is something with the board / sensors them selves. What board are you running?

Yeah, your probably "right on" about it being the board. I've got it in a Biostar TForce P965 now and everything seems OK, I had it in a AW9D-MAX and even though uGuru and CT would work, I couldn't even get TAT to load. (probably something simple I'm missing) I'm using XP right now, I plan on VISTA in the near future, is there much difference in the premiums? I was thinking of VISTA Home Premium. I fold 24/7 so my OC's are pretty mild. (do love the 4 MB cache in the E6420)

Honestly SuperPI is the only thing I see a measurable difference in though with the cache, games and apps dont really seem to use it. Re-encoding may, will have to try that later to see.

Why does the E6420 need so much vcore?
"To exist in this vast universe for a speck of time is the great gift of life. Our tiny sliver of time is our gift of life. It is our only life. The universe will go on, indifferent to our brief existence, but while we are here we touch not just part of that vastness, but also the lives around us. Life is the gift each of us has been given. Each life is our own and no one else's. It is precious beyond all counting. It is the greatest value we have. Cherish it for what it truly is."

maybe the cache, not sure. Im at 3576 @ 1.5625, 3502 needs 1.525v. But it will do 3.2 @ stock volts. All the sudden you hit a wall and need 1.5 just to boot. Temps are still under 50 loaded though. Orthos is running at 3576 @ 1.5625 - pencil vcore modded so its getting 1.56.
