    Unhappy Avoid 6600 - Batch 7638A742

Just a word to the wise for people that have access to chips based on batch codes. Avoid 7638A742 like the plague. Worst C2D chips I have ever come across. Failing Orthos with 1.45 on the core at 2.7G's and will not boot at 400FSB with any amount of voltage.

It crossed my mind more than once to 'give em ago' when Jammer was waiting for his Xeon
lots and lots of cores and lots and lots of tuners,HTPC's boards,cases,HDD's,vga's,DDR1&2&3 etc etc all powered by Corsair PSU's

Currently using a 629B. I have had access to a fair few 6600's (100+) and always check them to see how they clock. The current trend seems to be that the newer chips are getting worse for overclocking ability. Just thought I would give you the heads up.

    Maybe Intel are getting wise

i have an l631a, i haven't really tested it at all cuz the temps get really high fast at stock cooling just browsing online at 3.8ghz. not stable stress testing at 3.6ghz. i cant get any higher as it seems im limited to 420-425 fsb. its either the cpu or mobo. once i get watercooling ill find out

sounds like they are remaking the Layout for higher yields.

My 2 cent is that you should also avoid anything with F. The one I have keep failing Orthos at 3.24GHZ no matter what kind of Vcore voltage set.

Might be, however 7638A742 is fine, 3.6 1.5V stable and 3.9 1.65V benchable on air.

    F are not bad either, I had L628F 6300, hit 3.4GHz stable and L638F 6300 which hit 3.6Ghz stable at ~1.5V

Bs are the best, the only problem they heat up more

PS: It'll be hooked under watercooling.

    Thanks a lot!

EDIT: Did a few research and found out that these chips Oc pretty well and it's lapped

Yep agreed guys! It seems the Xeon's made in the Philipines suck! Mine however is still ORTHOS stable at around 3400 to 3480 but yes they are terrible clockers compared to other Xeons out there.

My L640A820 overclocks like crap as well. I wish I would have know that they are getting worse as time went on. It's too late to RMA it now.
