$1490 "Optimus Maximus" keyboard set for Winter 2007 delivery

Not vaporware after all. Just crazy expensive! I'll take a stack of Q6600s for that price

    http://www.engadget.com/2007/03/14/o...ards-unveiled/

Also, all the keys will in fact be OLED with an expected life span of only 5 years, depending upon use of course. Each 32 x 32 resolution OLED will remain stationary. Instead, the key-press mechanics are executed by a plastic cap which slides around the display like a sleeve to keep the wear and tear on the OLEDs to a minimum. Break a key? No problem, replacements will be offered for $10 a pop. Sorry, no freebies in the box like your Xmas tree lights -- we tried. And if you think that $1,490 is a bit too pricey for a 5-year keyboard, take heart: "two or three" additional keyboards are in the works with fewer programmable keys and a sub $1,000 price tag.

It's even more expensive than a 3007wfp ($1,274.00 atm), which has much more pixel area. If OLED is the main cause, then maybe they should have sticked with tiny LCD screens instead, but I don't see how this is the reason since OLED has become pretty main-stream on cellphones.

haha i remember like 5 years ago they said these would be $200 in 3 years...

5 years down the road it's 1500 dollars... hopefully the idea will live on in cheaper implementations... i still think its an awesome idea.

Who would pay a gazzilion bucks for quad core, SLI, phase change, 1000w PSU, Hipro Maximizer, overclocked RAM, etc. when the benefits only really show up in benchmarks?

Buy yeah, it's a tad expensive for a keyboard.

Let the rich guys buy it so these guys can build a factory, work the economies of scale, then make cheaper ones for the rest of us.

I think you answered your own question there. Benchmarkers and/or bleeding edge hardware freaks will and do pay gross amounts for the newest hardware, but a keyboard that expensive is really purely aesthetic. I have a $5 Lite-On keyboard and it's one of the best I've ever owned, so spending $1500 without any functional returns is utterly pointless.

That is just insanity. How does he think he will make any money on this? That being said if I was filthy rich I'd be all over this keyboard.
