DFI dishes plans for new motherboards
    By Geoff Gasior - 11:30 AM, March 8, 2007

One of our agents is loose in California, and he's scored some information on DFI's upcoming motherboard lineup. DFI says it will have a LANParty board based on Nvidia's nForce 680i chipset out by the end of the month, but interestingly, they're not planning a board based on the mid-range 650i chipset. Intel's P965 chipset won't get the LANParty treatment, either, although an Infinity series board based on the P965 is in the works. DFI has also reserved resources for future LGA775 boards based on former ATI chipsets now offered by AMD. We actually have the company's RD600-based LANParty ICFX3200-T2R/G in-house for testing; expect a full review soon.

Interestingly, we've learned that DFI will be building a second LANParty board based on Nvidia's nForce 680i chipset. This board is being crafted specifically for a gaming rig that will be sold by OEM giant HP, and the system may even carry LANParty branding.

We also asked DFI whether they consider Nvidia to be a direct competitor now that the chipset maker is building complete motherboards for resale by its partners. According to DFI, "that's not really competition because our boards are and will be much better." That may very well be the case, but even if DFI's LANParty 680i motherboard makes it out by the end of the month, it will have lagged the release of boards from Nvidia's reference design partners by more than four months.

On a side note, why does the DFI website suck so much?! It's soooo slow, and a lot of the pages don't work properly

This has been one of the main reasons I havent rushed into 775/C2D. Ive had two Ultra-Ds and never had a problem with them. I love the vast amount of options. The only reason I didnt go RD600 was because of the bugs. Hopefully with this release itll be somewhat bug free and Ill make my switch.

not so sure about that lol.

their 590 board never even made it to market (thank god)

frankly, DFi doesnt have the same engineering resources like ASUS does.

they don't have the same engineering resources would seem to me a reason for them to hold out and release the board later as well as seeing who else is doing what and capitalizing on that.

Cause well DFI is known for its overclocking and even though the next gen parts are coming, MOST users won't be buying next gen at release, and MOST of those users are where the board Manufacturers make their money.

We the enthusiast do buy the more expensive stuff yes, but our number is smaller in comparison. Though that may be slowly changing.

LOL! You gotta be kidding me!? I guess if you want quantity over quality in engineering, you got ASUS for that! ASUS could use better engineering on fewer products so they actually ship with decent BIOS. I laugh at some of the posts about Vcore issues with current ASUS boards... these are some of the same problems that plague my 2 year old ASUS SLI-Premium. They've learned nothing in that time... same old crap, time and time again. For all we know, they have one engineer... that would explain a lot actually!

ASUS = GM (6 versions of the same crappy product, each with a different name)
DFI = Audi (but even more boutique with the same quality/design)

I think ASUS use to be the Toyota of the enthusiast market, but they have long since lost their way and I now lump them in there with Thermaltake for some of the gimmick crap they are trying to pawn off.

I only build with D.F.I these days and after 10 builds I have yet to have one single issue! So for me I will wait the only other board I would consider is ABIT but Oskar Wu is the one with the Golden touch to bad he does not program bios for ABIT any more and ASUS well I won't patronize ASUS any more!

Quite frankly, DFI are out just in time.
I'd rather wait a little, and in turn get a product which holds up.
Not that asus doesn't, but dfi just does, a tad more.

i think it is a bit more complicated then that, but i know what you are saying.

Credit DFI for creating a market that wasnt there with the same force behind it that there is now. Also credit AMD+DFI.

DFI has never hit home runs with Intel motherboards, take a big guess why

Sure overclockers don't like vdrop but they just stick to cpu power design

DFI still has a lot of good will built up with a lot of PC enthusiasts. For some it started with the LPNF2, I picked my first one up with LPNF3 and had multiple LPNF4 mobos with only one dying due to condensation. Most of those LPNF4s went on to serve as gaming rigs for people I know. I even worked on one of those LPNF4 as recently as this last weekend. When I thought I might need a new bios chip due to a bone-headed move on my part, DFI offices here in the U.S. offered to send a new one for $10 or free if I gave them the one I had. After a very long CMOS clear it popped right back to life. But I digress ...

On the Intel side DFI hasn't made their mark yet. The Infinity 975x I have running in my second game rig is solid but unspectacular. I passed on their recent ATI chipset but am looking forward to the 965 mobo with more than 3v available to the dimms and will be waiting anxiously to find out if DFI can improve on the Nvidia reference design for the 680i chipset. Could the 680i chipset which is already a lot of fun for memory enthusiasts get even better when DFI who has an established reputation with memory tweakers, get even better?
