Orthos blend stable for 6 hours, next morning = no boot.

    Setup:

    Lian Li Mid-tower Case
    Gigabyte 965P-DS3
    E6600 + Tuniq Tower 120
    4 gb G.SKILL DDR800
    OCZ 600 watt GameXtream
    eVGA 8800 GTS
    Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeGamer

Yesterday, after installing my new Tuniq T120, I began overclocking my E6600. I found that at 3.4 ghz (multi = 9, FSB = 378) with 1.531~ volts in bios (around ~1.49 after vdroop) was seemingly stable. I ran orthos small FFT for 2 hours with no problem, then ran blend for 6 hours with no errors.

So last night, as usual when I headed to bed I turned off my PC and fell asleep. This morning I wake up, push the power button on the tower, and find something rather disturbing. The power LED goes on, fans start to spin, and then after about ~2 seconds it shuts off. A few seconds later that repeats, and on and on and on... I never get any video on my monitor and it just loops forever.

At this point I remove the CMOS battery (well... to clear the CMOS) and boot it up with default bios settings. It works now, so I figure it was just some weird fluke. I set the PC to 378 X 9 once more, and up the voltage to 1.55 in bios (thinking I might have just had slightly too little voltage for it to boot cold). Once again... same thing happens and I have to clear the CMOS once more. I'm running it at 8 X 400 right now (3.2 ghz CPU, 1:1 800 mhz for memory) and it's fine as far as I can tell.

So I guess my question is, how come it was Orthos stable yesterday at 3.4 ghz, yet this morning when I try to boot up it won't even post?

    Thanks very much in advance.

funny you got this problem... i built a system for a customer at work...
    E6700
    Tt BT
    eVGA 680i
    eVGA 8800GTS OC
    OCZ2GB VX2
    X-Fi Fatal1ty
    OCZ 850w GameXtreme

Had it running at 3.7GHz @ 1.45v. Let it run orthos over night and bam wouldn't boot in the morning. ran for maybe a second or two and then it made a high pitched whine and shut off. guess what..... POWER SUPPLY! Ordered a second 850w GameXtreme one and it was DEAD! Ordered a Coolermaster Realpower 850w and now it works flawlessly. Might wanna check out your OCZ

I assumed at first it might the PSU, but it works just fine at 3.2 ghz. That's why I kinda semi ruled that out. I'll give those F8i bios a try tommorow and see how that goes. If that doesn't work, I'll probably RMA the PSU.

    Thanks guys.

**Apparently I won't be going out to a movie til later tonight, so I went ahead and installed the F8 bios from Gigabyte's website and am running it at 378 X 9 (3.4 ghz) once more.

I figure I'll take this opportunity just to ask... What is the highest safe voltage to push an E6600? Right now after vdroop it's 1.5 idle, 1.47 load.

    Cheers

wow sorry didn't fully read it. just saw the beginning and assumed. thats a lesson....

as far as the max voltage, what temps r u running at? 24/7 i'd be comfortable with 1.5-1.55 so long as it stayed under 50c at least. Personal preference mostly though. Plus the it depends on the chip..... obviously.

As a side note. I guess it really depends on your stepping but it seems like you're using a lot of vcore for 3.2-3.4ghz.

If you look around the forums it seems like most people only need about 1.42 or so to get that overclock.

Maybe you can try lowering your volts and who knows maybe it'll help ur boot issues too.

Under 50c with 100% load? I don't see that happening with 1.5+ volts (after vdroop). Not for my setup anyways, even with the Tuniq T120 I was getting 59-60c under load with 1.531 volts in bios.

Yeah, I found it odd how much voltage I was having to pump into this thing to keep it stable. However, at 3.4 ghz (378 X 9), I was not able to pass more than ~30 minutes of Orthos with less than 1.531 volts. 1.525 failed within those 30 minutes, and 9 times out of ten gave me a BSOD. Not sure why this chip seems to need SO much damn voltage.

And HamidFULL, thanks so much for that link. I got a cold boot issue not even 30 minutes after I posted that LOL. I just kinda thought, "eeeehhh... I thought F8 didn't have the cold boot issue... whatever..."

    Strange, my e6600 @ 3.6ghz only needs 1.43V actual. It's a L32B stepping.

BTW, what temps are you getting?
