my vote goes to server 2008, though i have only ran the trial, solid in all respects.

    xpx64/xp 32 bit of course.

vista 64 has proved very reliable for me, though far from perfect, still a nice os after you give it a week or two..been running it a year..and now performance is equal or better then xp in all regards in most apps/games.

and of course Fedora 9/ubuntu 8.04

    ubuntu 8.04 is the

why are win 98/SE and 2000 on this list? win 2000 was awesome...but OLD and moldy..i thought this was a new list of os..those are not new, or supported anymore to my knowledge.

    Server 2008 with Desktop Exerience.

It's not the 'best' in terms of features, usability or any single measure. It's the best because it's pretty close on features, usability, etc...plus has a larger base of users, developers and supporting technologies behind it.

Unless of course you factor in price...

Mac OS X is the best OS since it was made for the hardware that's intended for. Yet, Microsoft Vista is the most popular, since it's a cheaper alternative (PC - all package) and offers better entertainment for the masses. The other OS's from M$ or an irony tho this tread - I mean who could still say that Win 98 is the best without making a joke about it?

I see the pool got fixed in the last minutes or hours. Now what will it happen with those people still stuck in '99? - the news about Win 98 not supported anymore might come as a shock to them.

Maybe you need to learn how to use vista. Maybe MS needs a new beta tester.
Vista is by far better than XP at this early stage in its life.

Mac is a system tested to the highest level of compatibility, even custom mods for it's components. Even the OS X is part of that compatibility with the system. Windows on the other hand, was developed for a general configuration based on different drivers for each component, but nobody can confirm that would work stable and be compatible with any configurations (it would be practicably impossible). It's true that there are companies like Dell, Lenovo (IBM) and others, who did the same as Apple but based on a Win OS. But it's far from a combination like "Mac + OS X". I've seen Mac's with crappy configurations that could run an application (even a game) much better then a PC with components that logically have twice the performance. OS X was build for Mac and Mac was build for OS X - it's one the best configurations out there, only custom made UNIX systems show similar potential but those are not made for consumer class, since there industry Systems.

Now you know, at least in theory - you should try it in practice when you grow older. That if you'll have a job decent enough to afford one of those. But then again if by then you use an System/OS for same thing you use it now (I guess that games and :banana::banana::banana:) a PC with Windows might be the only alternative. And yes, even a Max OS X can run games and :banana::banana::banana:, even better then a PC but it's not worth it if that's the only think you'd wanna use a Mac System, that in my opinion.

XP Pro heavily stripped with nLite (see sig). OSX also.

I like what my friend posted to me in a recent email:

Are you excited about getting your mac? Have ya the monies all saved up yet? I'm excited about mine and im enjoying the excessiveness of how much they cost and how other people can't afford them. Do you feel this too? Do you take great pleasure in the fact that other people might be jelouse that we have them, yet we do not leave the house and they can't afford them even thought they work 50 hours a week at the co op? Do you look forwards to the day when you take out your laptop and everyone else in the room has to bask in your superiority? If and when you take your macbook pro to other peoples houses people will actually comment on and congratulate you on your mac and offer compliments! They will actually do this in real life. I know this because it happens to me. It's like when they see it they automatically know that you are better than them and are on awe of you.

I've been a die hard tried and true XP Pro user, I never even considered Vista, much less Vista 64> I installed Vista 64 on my new build a month or so ago thinking of doing a dual boot so I might aquaint myself with Vista as it's the default OS on the vast majrity of new machines. I've never looked back and felt absolutely no need to dual boot w/XP which really surprised me. Vista and more to the point 64 bit os's have sure matured over the last couple of years.
I tried XP Pro 64 when it first came out and nothing worked, I take that back it did run IE 64. I haven't had any serious problems to date. I'm looking forward to the day that a Linux Distro or two really take hold and breaks the monopoly Microsoft enjoy's. I think we'll all benefit from that and Microsoft do some amazing things given some competition..

unfortunately OS X doesn't have Directx, and thats the biggest difference

for me, so even after the sucess of vista 64 SP1, i'm still using XP PRO

    with some tweaks is great.

you should update w7 in the pool

    cheers
