    Question 10K HD Cooling Question(s)...

Hello, I am about to purchase a 10K WD Raptor.. and I was wondering how dangerous this was, regarding high temperatures... would placing it directly in front of the two intake fans of my Case and mounting one of those Aluminum HDD Dual Fan Cooling Device be sufficient? How hot do these things run and are supposed to be kept at? Thank you very much! =)

Dont get a cooler. Not needed. I run both my raptors in an antec 3.5>5.25 converter bay with a 7200 drive in there as well with no fan on my desk. No overheating or issues. A single intake fan is more than enough.

Raptors run hot, I wouldn't run 4 stacked Raptors without some kind of active cooling. A low speed fan 80mm + is good enough. If you are just getting a single Raptor, you can pretty much get away with passive, or just like fireinside said.

I'd be more concerned with your overall case airflow. I run a 150GB Raptor with another 7200rpm Seagate on top of it, no fan blowing on them, with 20C ambient they never get above 30C. I just have one 80mm front intake and 120mm exhaust. The drives are above the 80mm intake. As long as I keep the 120mm exhaust up full (Antec Tricool) temps are OK (read in Everest). If I turn the 120mm down all the way, then temps go up to around 37C.

Remarkably enough I just bought my first Raptor and it runs @ 28- 30c @70f ambient temp.

I have 2 in the front bottom of a Lian Li PC70 and they are fine with the 2-80's in the front blowing in.
One night I did some work on the machine and forgot to plug in the front fans.
An hour later I put my hand near the drives and could feel the heat coming from them 5" away..Got the fans back on and cool in minutes.
I don't think they need lots of air but I do think that having some constant airflow will do the trick and definately increase the lifespan.

I've had two 36gb raptors with 2 more hard drives on top of them with nothing but the 80mm intake fan on my case as the only cooling for over 3 years. No extra cooling is needed.

I have a 80gb raptor and i have just 1 fan blowing it cool. You make it sound like they're super hot but they're only a bit hotter than regular 7200rpm hdd's.

Thanks guys, this really helps =)... I'm very paranoid with Heat on my whole system, but I don't like water cooling (I find them expensive, complicated, and I Hate the Radiators out there, etc)... The HD Rack is directly infront of the 2 Intake Fans, So I'll just stick it in there with an empty HD Slot on top and on the bottom of it...

I'll log on to Tigerdirect and place an order for it right now... I'll post later how it worked out

    Thanks again!!! =)
