New ATi drivers sport huge open GL boost...

    http://theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=37778

    For linux too.

    NN_step should like this.

AMD claims it will increase the speed of Doom 3 by a quarter, boost Prey by 21 per cent while Quake 4 will be better by half.

These claims are based on the current speed of these apps with ATI Radeon X1000 series, but did not go into detail about how fast is this compared to default speed in Windows XP.
They site most of the gains as being in vista, but hopefully it will give improvments across all platforms.

    Vista

I wonder where is nvidia on it.

The highlight of the release is the improved speed of OpenGL applications under Vista. AMD claims it will increase the speed of Doom 3 by a quarter, boost Prey by 21 per cent while Quake 4 will be better by half.

There is no performance boost for Linux with the AMD 8.34.8 Display Driver:

hopefully AMD/ATi continues to make wonderful strides across all platforms

Yeah, vista and xp had similar performance in everthing except open gl, that's where vista sucked.

Great for gamers, but they still can't run Folding@Home correctly on the GPU. Go figure...

these are the beginning strides that AMD needs to shove at their new acquisition, next hurdle: linux

ATI has always had lackluster support for OpenGL, under all platforms, now they're making strides forward, after who owns them? AMD.

now that AMD's convinced ATI to support OGL better, next obvious step is to finally get decent linux support.

well yesterday i ran the soft shadows benchmark 1.5.4 and got the score of 1489 with crossfire activated and cpu @ 4050mhz today i did a dirty driver install (no format) and the 7.2s gave me a score of 1978 same exact settings for system and benchmark. this is on xp mce 2005 which is basically pro. so i'm guessing the drivers will help with xp open gl as well as vista.

Considering OpenGL didnt work with the old driver on Vista, any driver with working OpenGL will result in a huge boost

I'd always had this theory that ATi had drivers and nvidia had hardware

well g80 fixed nvida's hardware problem and it looks like ATi is working on the drivers...

Honestly the Drivers developing team from ATi did a great job with this driver, I can see the difference is FPS, measured that in more then one games (XP not Vista).

So does it help any games that are less than 6 months old?

x1900 is more than powerful enough for all those games anyway so who cares?

Open GL performance improves for all ATI Radeon™ X1000 series products. Gains of up to 25% in Doom 3, 48% in Quake 4 and 21% in Prey can be seen on a variety of ATI Radeon™ X1000 cards.
    Yes.

Depends on what Res you're playing it at.. Doom3 has some VERY ugly hiccups on my 1900xtx at 1920X1200 that weren't present at 1280X1024 with either this card or my 7900GT.

I'm planning on downloading these drivers and testing them out in all the listed games to see if my FPS improves..

I'm pretty much done folding on my GPU.. too many weird lockups requiring reboots that don't happen when I just use the card to game. A little boost in Quake 4 (which I just finally bought but haven't played all the way through) would be awesome!

At what 1280x1024. Not every game plays decently with just a X1900XT card in the machine expecialy high res with features turned on, and im not talking about AA or AF cranked.

Sorry but everyone saying the X1900 is more then powerful enough for current games have to think at what settings they are playing at. Considering a people usually want the best looks so all features on AF for sure up to a certain point and probably some AA if theres enough power left.
