It is nearly pointless to have the HR-03 in this configuration... Idle is 54c at stock clocks and an ambient of 25c. On my P5B-D, unimpeded idle was 44c
this was what i faced with a heatpipe already installed on Giga 7600GT card...when i added a 80mm fan to the front side of the card it took away one of my PCI slots...no biggy since i was not planning on using it but just the idea of the board being limited was bugging me.

SO...what did i do!...buy an XFX 8800 GTS card (without realizing the heat issue)...WOW..that baby runs very warm at 56C for idle and no overclock...my solution to lower temps (some) was to mount 2 low volume (low noise) 80 mm fans on top of the VC...it takes 5C right off the top...before, you could cook a fried egg on the heat sink...now...i warm my coffee up..LOL

It's improbable... I eyed the clearance from the RAM and it looks like it will block the bottom of the RAM when they're in the DIMMs... I'll try it in practice though soon and report back.

It sucks... afaik no one has released anything else that will come close to this good of cooling for an 8800.

On an unrelated note, how many PCI slots do a 120mm fan take up?

Excellent, that means my idea of fitting the fan indirectly to the two Thermalright R600 HR-03s and the dual 2900XT will work out just fine...

    Thanks, Brendan

My HR-3 base is pretty damn concave. I was getting 71C idle. I checked it out and the base doesn't even make contact with most of the core. Only the sides had contact. I did the razor test and it's bad.
Also one of the big nuts is not tapped right.
I was expecting a great product from Thermalright...

Well i found my own way while i was sleeping and did it today with the help of tie wraps and the protective spongie thing from the box of HR-03 plus..

First of all i put a small piece of sponge between the cooler`s base and the cap for the screws so that i can pass the tie wraps through the holes and give the correct pressure...(kinda like a spring onto a bolt)...
secured the cooler onto the card with double tie wrap ends,plac3d the Scythe 9mm and voila....rock stable...

Temps are about 34C idle with the fan at the lowest rpm (~1200) and around 44C load with 22C room temp...

Thanks for the idea! I used my old HR-03 Plus on a reference cooled 4850 and dropped load temps by 44C! The highest temps I could find in GPU-Z's log after playing Left 4 Dead @ 1680x1050 4x AA were:

    GPU Temperature 44 C
    GPU Temp.(DISPIO) 44.5 C
    GPU Temp.(MEMIO) 53.5 C
    GPU Temp.(SHADERCORE) 46.5 C

Room temperature was 23.5 C. I can't remember the temps from reference cooler, except the GPU which hit 88 C on 40% fan speed. New fan's a 1200 RPM Scythe SFLEX and of course fairly quiet and on par w/ the reference cooler @ 40%. I didn't use the foam, but did use the backplate and that seems to have taken care of the tension needed to touch the Radeon's core. Also, I reused all the old sticky tape from the reference cooler and it seems to be holding just fine. Here's some pics.
