Question Is 3M Scotchkote safe on PCB?

Just curious as I'm thinking about coating around my socket and back of motherboard with it to help with condensation. Will it hurt anything?

    Thx in advance. Ez question

No, that doesn't look like what you need.

    You need a conformal coating.
    such as:
    http://www.mgchemicals.com/products/419b.html

that is designed for pcb use.

Scotchkote isn't designed to be a permanent thing IIRC. Isn't it the equivalent of liquid electrical tape?

    Conformal coating is permanent.

Rgr thx for that mate. I just decided to go with the nail polish and skip the Scotchkote. Been up for a bit now and monitoring condensation and haven't seen any yet!

No condensation for a few hours, then it hit, and ate my new mobo with it... DAMNIT!

I have a brick of non hardening duct seal that I was thinking about using around the outside edges of the socket (the area between the actual plastic socket and the metal hold down mechanism. I was just gonna cram it in to get out all of the air inside the socket area, would that work?

Hell, could I use the duct seal on problem areas of the mobo, I don't think it conducts. Kinda reminds me of seal string, nasty stickyish but it comes in a brick.

I'm thinking about Scotchkoting this next board I get too, in place of fingernail polish since I already have a bottle of the Scotchkote.

I'm going to make it my friggin mission to ensure that I get no condensation whatsoever on this new board... I've now had my Vapo eat a brand new P5B and a brand new ICFX3200 within a week, not happy!

I read that you can put silicon grase (or somthings) down inside of the pin's holes of the cpu socket. they say it helps seal it? but it looks messy.

I think i saw this in a vapochill installition guide.

dielectric grease is the stuff. i use it in my mounting to fill the voids under the cpu and i also use it in the void where the latch is.

Yeah I was thinking about using it in the retension mechanisms gaps, but I had posted up earlier about using this brick of duct seal I have, think that would work?

if i was you i would buy the proper stuff to insulate not try to use what you have laying around. by my math you have killed $500.00 worth of high end equipment in a week and that is assuming your other stuff survived. plenty of online stores carry armaflex, conformal coating, dielectric grease ,neoprene and anything else you may need and it can be there as quick as your new motherboard. just my 2 cents i'm not trying to bust your bawls or anything.

Nah man it's all good. I've already ordered a shedload of neoprene and dielectric.

ahh "dielectric" grease, thats the word i was looking for. yea we used that stuff to coat high voltage connections to our x-ray tubes (good up to 300 KVolts).
