PQI's 64GB SSD with SATA connector

    source here

PQI DiskOnModule Manager, Bob Chu states, “With flash storage technology catching up to traditional disc platter storage devices and motherboard designs being more compact than ever, most IDE connectors have been replaced by the smaller and faster SATA interfaces. At the same time, available spaces for device(s) have been reduced dramatically and hence, SATA DOM was developed. SATA interface takes up less space and provide faster transfer rate (up to 100MB/sec) than IDE connectors and maximum SATA DOM capacities will likely reach 128GB in 2007.

I'm sad to say that those prices aren't going anywhere soon.

Yeah, I know. Not for a few years anyway.

If I hit the lottery, however.

The latest 16Gb flash spot price is $19.88 (samsung 16Gb SLC)
    To make a 64GB SSD....

    flash ICs cost=$20*32=$640
    controller IC & warranty & service=$100 (maybe)

Just give it time, ram density is growing quickly.

The only HDD company well positioned against the growth of SSD's is SAMSUNG.

Just imagine a 5TB drive with 100GB of NAND integrated into that drive

    Thats the future...

In the mean-time, NAND will get cheap and replace high end laptops, then mid-range laptops, then move into desktops.

There will always be hard drives, no doubt. But the era of every computer having a hard drive will end soon.

SSDs have 0.1ms tipical access time, but are short in bandwith, the fastest do about 40MB/s in read and a lot less in write...

Bandwidth is easy to fix on something like this....just add more channels.

(okay, easier said than done, but it's easier than it is with hard disks)

Yeah, I'm pretty sure striped arrays of these scale linearly or at least very close to it.

    and your point is?
that is half of a high end drive. Putting two in raid (any type you prefer) and you'll break records

Putting two in RAID? No, I like Vapor's idea better, that's almost as if you have an internal RAID, like having two units in RAID but then in a single unit.

Absolutely, a nice 4-8GB drive is plenty for OS and Games. MRAM would be killer but probably cost way too much
