Optimizing the SETI BOINC Client for Windows

    Optimized SETI@HOME Apps, INfo, Downlads

    http://lunatics.kwsn.net/index.php

If you already have BOINC installed just attach to:

    http://setiathome.berkeley.edu

Determine which instructions your CPU supports
then download optimized SETI program from:

    http://lunatics.kwsn.net/index.php

Installation of the optimized app is simple.

Copy all files in the "Files to install" directory to your BOINC\projects\setiathome.berkeley.edu folder.
There is a file called "app_info.xml" included that will make BOINC use this app automatically.

To use it, exit and re-open the BOINC Manager if you're running it in single-user mode, or re-start the service if you're using service mode.

That's it, you're done! You can open your task manager to see that it's really the new optimized app crunching your WUs.

BOINC will tell you that it found app_info.xml and is using an "anonymous platform".

You can find updates, instructions and source code here:
    http://lunatics.at/

when running the optimized version it will cut the time to crunch WUs in half. 5-6 hours for a 60pt WU down to 2 hours. AMD 3000+ 754

Now a few words about optimization. Many of you want to "optimize" your system. There has been some confusion about what parts to optimize for best results, since there are optimizations for the Boinc client, and the science apps.

The optimized boinc clients *may* help speed a tiny amount by switching tasks a little tiny bit faster, etc. however they are only useful if they contain features that are desired but not available in the original client.

The real gain in crunching speed comes from an optimized "application". These are applications that have been optimized to take advantage of special instruction sets available on most cpu's (computer chips). These may be mmx, sse, sse2, sse3, etc. Each offers different specialized commands that can be used to speed up crunching. In the old Seti application (the ver. 4.xx series) there was no optimization in the default application at all, so anything was an improvement. Speed increases of up to 300% and more were seen using optimized applications. The new Enhanced Seti application is already highly optimized, so you will not see nearly as large of a speed boost using the enhanced apps, but you will get some benefit. While I've not kept track of the speeds, I've seen claims of between 20 and 40% speed increases using the proper optimized application for your computer chip set.

Been running the optimized client since this morning. On my C2D at 3.6, most wu's would be about 1-1.5 hours. Now they are all less than 1 hour.

Yes it will/should work for WCG, but if you ask the WCG captains they dont want optis to be run. Everyone runs the standard client.

@Safrout download the full package and run the auto installer, it will do a test wu and determine which is the fastest opti app to use...
running the app will not affect any other boinc project
Make sure the install is only done in the SETI folder!

5.50 will affect any other project that uses the boinc benchmark for scoring ie wcg, qmc, lmc... but with a quorum you prob will not get the points claimed
SETI and projects like that have set points per wu type...
CPDN is based on fixed credit per % complete

@Mike047 5.50 will not help or hurt SETI

Use this link for the optimize app

    - Windows SETI@Home apps - SSE3+ optimized executables.

They are based on Eric Korpela's source tarball (you can find it in the Links section). The current Berkeley stock application version is 5.27.
The current lunatics.kwsn.net code revision is Alex Kan's v8.0.
Windows builds for SSE2 and below and IA64 from the 2.4 sources are the 2.4V builds by Crunch3r, available from his pages.

    32-bit Windows AK v8.0 without graphics (current) - 32-Bit Windows ports of Alex Kan's Ver. 8 for SSE3, SSSE3, and SSE4.1. Non-graphic builds for x86 only.

64-bit Windows AK v8.0 without graphics (current) - 64-Bit Windows ports of Alex Kan's Ver. 8 for SSE3, SSSE3, and SSE4.1. Non-graphic builds for AMD and Intel x86 systems with 64 bit Windows only.
