OCZ Technology Group, a leading supplier of memory modules aimed at overclockers and performance computing enthusiasts, plans to re-enter the graphics cards business in the forthcoming weeks by launching graphics card products based on the GeForce 8800-series chips running at speeds beyond recommended by Nvidia Corp.

No, overclocked versions is not always good. Sometimes clocked card versions don't clock that good since they have been clocked to limits already at the factory. Yes, you pay for guaranteed speed but still

It's OCZ, and my guess is that they will simply get the chanche to handpick the cores.

There is no way Nvidia's other partners would allow this to happen. OCZ will do as they have stated and just sort through the cards and separate them out into different tiers. They'll sell the best at a premium. Unless they're able to sell the less than stellar performers at a big discount from whatever the market price is, I'd stay away from the low end cards.

Speed binning video cards will offer some consumers a service they will embrace. But I wouldn't be surprised if some people at XS who have no problem paying a premium on memory sticks will flinch a little at the same idea applied to video cards. That was my initial reaction. Not entirely sure why. It'll be interesting to see how this idea plays out in the video card market.

Hmmm, one thought that occured to me, what would prevent them from selling the 'reject' cards to an eVGA or an MSI?

I bet they could do it with little loss too....buy a huge batch (low cost per part), bin accordingly, sell the ones you don't want at the price you bought it at (only a loss of labor), but still lower than what eVGA, XFX, etc. buy normally. I'm pretty sure they already do this with memory (just not the binning part). The one problem they'd have is that unless their binning was extremely tight, they'd either have too many cards leftover for their potential market (let's remember, they haven't been the GPU game the past few years), or just couldn't get enough to get eVGA, XFX, etc to agree to do this. In which case, there would be known bad cards that we might want to avoid

That was the first thing that came in to my mind when I heard that OCZ tries the VGA domain - because their ram is wanted for this ability (Good OC)

Selling by speed bin at "same rating" has been done by G.Skill back in TCCD days.

I hardly see how this is anything but an obvious solution to the rules imposed by nVidia.

In fact, it's the first thing I've thought of.
