Or am I completely out of the ballpark here.

Mind you, I'm not 100% on what stretches the video as I don't pay too much attention to the movie playback on videocards, that's why I'm asking. I'm more-so into their 3d capabilities than their movie power.
Scaling has always been done by the computer, not the monitor. The only time that's not true is with LCDs, when you use a resolution below their native. But even that has nothing to do with video playback.

Now the article is saying the G80 can't do dual link resolutions with HDCP, and that might be true. I don't know where they get the idea that the R600 can though, that remains to be seen, and I'm holding onto my cards til then. But then the article tries to say that this means you'll be limited to 720p. That, folks, is a load of crap. Dual link DVI is needed for resolutions like 2560x1600... 1920x1080 is well within the capabilities of a single DVI connection, which means everyone with a good enough monitor will be able to enjoy the best these next generation movie formats have to offer.

Only problem is, there are hardly any monitors out with HDCP.

According to DVI 1.0 Specification here...
    Digital Vistual Interface

On page 7, you will see how much the single link TMDS can do... The HDTV 1080p (1920x1080) can be done on a single link TMDS only if it supports 60Hz with 5% banking to LCD (that is why we always see UWXGA resolution always supports with reduced banking). Thus, if the TMDS on G80 cannot manage this 5% banking spacification... chance are they might be broken... but I have a doubt that atleast 1080i would be allowed.

If it does work it probably will not for long before the MPAA steps in.

Ok so this means people that require dual link will not be able to use HDMI.

All cards support that now. It runs 1920x1200 just fine for me and I'm using a single link cable.
