    Hyperthreading

!st I hope this is the right forum for this

I cannot boot my system with Hyperthreading disabled i get a blue screen with this on it.

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down....DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
    Stop:0x000000D1

when i enable Hyperthreading my system boots normally.

As for the Windows error message.. I know that can a number of different things...and after a bit of Googling, apparently these two files get added when Hyperthreading is enabled.
    - halmacpi.dll
    -ntkrnlmp.exe

So i'm thinking that these are causing the fault...(guessing) but don't know if its safe to remove them.

    P4 3.4Ghz prescott
    Gigabyte GA-8S661FXMP-RZ
    GeForce FX5200
    Wd 160Gb HDD
    Seagate 120Gb HDD
    LG 16x burner
    Lite-on DVd rom
    1Gb Generic DDR 3200

The reason i want to turn it off is i read that the cpu runs cooler with it disabled..mine is idleing at 52c.but jumps upto 75c and above when using applications like photoshop.

So is there a way to disable it and be able to boot without doing a re-install. If I disable it in the BIOS, then do a Repair with the XP pro CD, would that work..As you can probably Guess i'm a bit of a NooB at this.

    cheers

So you wanna sacrifice performance for a couple of deg C... The PC will not run that much cooler, but it will definitely "feel" slower and not as responsive... How about just gettinhg a better heatsink... You can get $20~30 aftermarket coolers that will shave 10~15deg off your temps... That would be a logical thing to do...
If you got no money to spare, just take the cover off the PC and have a room fan directed at it...

You must be Psycic (spell?) I have the cover of and a fan blowing at it now

I have a Zalman quiet HSF installed...But my question is why should it be so difficult (for me that is) to disable Hyperthreading in the BIOS..If all it takes is to change it from Disabled to Enabled...surely it should be as simple to reverse the process.

And i'm thinking of getting a better case for my system...one that has better Airflow.

    cheers
