Yup, old farts rule.

When I was in high school, I think the must-have gadget was a Bowman calculator. I preferred my slide rule though. I grew up in the heart of Silicon Valley, but was oblivious to technology for a long time.

My last year of High School the "rich" kid got a hand held calculator..Cost over $200.00 then, today it's $5.00 in the check out aisle at the groc store.
Good thing is that I learned to do math in my head and that stays today.
they don't teach the math "tricks" anymore. A shame..

Yes, you are right. Computers are a blessing and a curse. They have made people intellectually lazy.

I think what Movieman was talking about was that in the old days, very few people had calculators. They learned, often on their own, various shortcuts to doing calculations. In other words, they had to rely on their brains. Just by scanning a list of 9-10 numbers like the ones in my checkbook, I can come pretty close to calculating the total amount within a matter of a few seconds. But I've become lazy like a lot of other people and rely on calculators and other devices to do the work for me.

I've got a TI-83 Plus, and guess what: we're allowed to save up every chapter of our books in our calculators, so life has gotten easier for us... And it can be overclocked!!
