I hope to do more sub zero runs this year. Last year i'd leave my window open in my apartment to drop the temp to about 0C inside. This year i'll try to do some garage benching @ -30Cish. Is the extreme colds hard on the hard drive or monitors?

Yes, low temps are hard on HDD's so simply wrap one in insulation and it's own heat will keep it warm.

LCD's.... hmmm.... I'm not sure about that.

My HDD started to do strange things, with about -5°C ambient, so i think it is better to keep the HDD at ~ +15°C!

I really look forward for winter.
a run outside is scheduled for some more GPU clocks.
I use stock heatsink on it so without ambient sub, no good clocks for benchies with my X800GTO

Plain aircooling is really the best for subzero i think, because water is responding to slow with the ambients. Think i will install my XP120 with my 120x120x38mm Sunon then!

If the heatsinks based on heatpipes do not work anymore, then I think the good old copper heatsinks (those from thermalright back in the Atlon XP days) might give you the best performance. There are a few other non-heatpipe heatsinks out there, like the one from Swiftech above, or those from Alpha Pal. Don't know about newer heatsinks, those days it's all about heatpipes.

We've theorized for years that TEC's have a point where the cold doesn't help any more... would be nice to see.
Basicly there are no heatsinks out there that can handle high end TEC's with overclocked CPU. And the temp difference on chipset's or other stuff would not be big enough to see a real differance on your overclock. Besides that, we do love watching graphs, so if someone feels like doing stuff like that, please do so

how about a Zalman 7700Cu? It would likely be a good subzero cooling HSF.

I'm running the stock AMD heatsink on my 3800+ orleans which is just an aluminum brick so that should work fine sub zero, the stock 7900gt heatsink would too but i was hoping to get a vf900 - hmmm

give me a month or so and we'll have some nice cool winter temps here in canada. Give me a couple months and we'll have some REALLY cool temps of sub -30C (sometimes sub-40C but that's a little too damn coldto be doing this in) that I can have some fun in.

yes absolutely... AS Ceramique is EXCELLENT. Also, the standard low budget TIM that comes free with hardware (the plain white stuff) is good, too.

Also, it'd be REALLY cool if when you post your OC pics and screenies also include a pic of your front yard, back yard, street or whatever... extra points for snow drifts, icy sidewalks and steam coming off of warm things.

    Fargo, North Dakota

My research show a trip there about January 15-25 would yield easy -10F temps(-23C)

This might be fun... Los Angeles to Minneapolis is about $230 and that gets you within 200 miles of Fargo. Then AMTRAK will get you to Fargo in 4 hours for $36.

Now I need to find a hotel with a balcony/patio so I can put rig outside with KBM inside.

    My weapon of choice:

Asus P5B Deluxe. I will probably cover the caps with spray insulation. E6700 should do fine...

Need to bring a couple HS/F's... I'll try a Scythe Infinity to see if HP work. And I'll bring a Swiftech HS and a VT Tornado.

    Hmmmmmm...

What an adventure. The Infinity is good, but do you not think a P5H DH would be better for a Conroe?

Since I'd be OCing for max gHz I'd want to eliminate any possible FSB walls...

Being from Minnesota, I can say you want to go to Grand Forks, North Dakota. It is always about 10-15 colder than Fargo. UND is there and maybe 5 years ago I went to see some friends, and temperatures at night hit -65. We went out and I mean this my eyes froze walking outside for 2 minutes. The tears in my eyes had turned to ice. If you want to get extreme go there it will be ridiculously cold in January.

Man, I wish I lived somewhere that it got down to -20C, I'm lucky if it even gets to 0C at night, during the winter.

This past week has dropped temps down drastically and fast.
This week Im finishing up my benching here inside then this weekend I will take it out to the garage.
Im hoping to get my 165 around 3ghz.
I did this last year and got my 150 to 2.9ghz.
Its great fun running back in to the house fast enough to keep your hands from going numb
