    Grunty chiller

I am building another chiller, but this one im designing to cool a 6800 conroe and X2 7900gt's in sli.
Started the other day by buying a whole condensing unit fom kirbys.
    It's a 1/2 hp compressor designed to displace 550watts @ -30c.
    Will be running on R404a.

Here's what it looks like now

Finished the evap today, there's about 7.5 meters of 3/8 tube, the resivour will hold around 8 litres of coolant and will be 275 x 400 x 80mm high.

Advice on cap tube diameter and length would be appreciated.

    Wow,
Go big or go home. When you buy the cap tube, it will have the recommended lengths in the box.

But I would suggest(since your going big dollars to start with) to go with a CPEV. There ~$40-50USD and will out run cap tube by a mile. Plus there adjustable.

either that or a txv, would make sense for quick pulldown and low temps

550w @ -35C with what refrigerant, probbably 134a. The capacity wont be the same with r404a, unlese those specs are for r404a.

    Sorry. I meant 550watts @ -30. on R404a Linky AE18LZ-1KS

Hmmm budgit is nearly shot, espesilly as i need to change the condensor fan, this 230vac fan is way too loud and not really designed to be speed controlled. Thinking about four 120mm 12vdc fans, that way, if i run them in parrallel and keep the total current below 500mA, i can control them by the G-Froster.
I havn't ruled out a txv yet tho. It would make a kick ass chiller just that much more kick ass we'll see.

Dam i'ts not easy finding 12vdc fans that push a decent amount of air, but using little current in doing so.
    Finaly found these tho,
    Vantec Stealth 120mm fan

    53 CFM
    12vdc
    0.08A
    0.96 W
    28 dBA
Four of these will do nicely me thinks. Will be well under our 500mA threashold, they're quiet, and should have enough flow to do the job.
I pick them up tomorrow with a little luck, then i will compare the volume of the original fan to the four 120mm's.

Have a look at these fans.

    http://www.silenx.com/ixtremaprofans.asp?sku=ixp-76-18

You could also use the PWM output of the G-Froster to control a 230V fan.

It's not possible to hold 550w @ -35°C with a 1/2hp, meaning the R134a is under 1 bar and according to his enthalpy chart it needs a high flowrate that 1/2hp can't provide

they are still horrible. They lie completely about their specs. Just because they work doesn't mean the are good. Check out SPCR/Silence fanatics. Their forum members have used the fans and they are complete lies.

He needs air pressure to move air through the condensor, there is no way SilenX can have enough air pressure to move even a tiny bit of air through it

Actually you dont, you need the opposite.

The fan being on the rear of the condenser creates a low pressure zone in front and that caused more air to move in.

I have played with a low cfm fans and they do just fine unlese you have a really deep or dence-finned condenser or your condenser is running extreemly hot for whatever configuration reasons you have.

Best thing to do it try lower cfm fans first then see if that works then work your way up as you need to. No need to have a noisy fan unlese you have to. And remember lower condening temperatures doesnt mean better, infact quite the opposite. If you dont believe me try to put some ice on your condenser. The pressure difference is smaller and temperatures get warmer on the evap.

Its all about a healthy ballance.

If you read the entire thread you'll see i edited that mistake and provided a link to kirby's spec sheet.

As for the fans, i'm going with the Vantec stealth fans, 6 of them they are urber quiet and over 50cfm each. 6 of them will still run through the G-froster fan controller using 0.48amps.
epion is right (as usual) it is easyer to pull air through a condensor than it is to push it through.
I'm getting a fan shroud made up and laser cut, which i will pick up tomorrow.
I have a frigie mate calculating evaporator size, cap tube diameter and length, hopefully he'll have that done for me tomorrow too.
Resivour was couriered down and arrived yesterday, i'll get a pic of it and post it later this arvo.
Been LANing all weekend @ L3, it went off, usually get about 100 people turn up. Managed to decrease my superpi personal record while there by about another .03 secs. lol still faster tho

Picked up the fan shroud from the laser cutters today.

Proceeded to drill mounting holes for the fans.

Mounted the fans to the shroud.

Fixed the shroud to the condensor, and viola, Fan shroud fabrication 101

I'm thinking this is way beyond overkill on the condensor... all that surface area and all those fans will likely only give you a waste of space and a lot of noise. I doubt it will really affect your minimum water temps much if anything.

Nice so far, enjoying this thread. How much was the complete Condensing unit if you dont mind me
