    Memory price 2*512MB VS 2*1GB

    Hi,

I have all the pieces to build my PC, only memory missing.

I read a lot here and can't find a real explanation about what I'm gonna ask

Right now, is 2*512MB is enough or it is A LOT better to go with 2*1GB ... I mean I play games, do normal things on my pc but nothing extraordinary. I wanted to go with 2GB but damn memory prices went up a lot in the last month and I think I'm gonna wait.

My question is, if I buy 2*512MB ... and then later price drop and I buy 2*512 again, is it going to be as fast or as good as 2*1GB ?

For OC .. is it better to have 2*1GB or 2*512MB will do the same job (if it is the same memory)

Last thing, I was ready to buy G.Skill 2*512MB or 2*1GB PC6400HZ but here in canada I can't find them

I can get Kingston, OCZ, Corsair and Geil

I want 800MHZ memory to OC my E6400 so if anyone have other idea then the G.Skill let me know

Thanks to all for the answer

you have the E6400 dual core -> 2x1GB!!!! pretty much all newer games etc will use it all up happily.. in 2003 I got 2x512mb and it lasted up till now pretty fine. do yourself a favor and take that step to 2x 1GB.

future proof yourself, go for the 1gb dimms. When Vista comes out and you find out that you need 4GB (damn Microsoft) you'll be able to drop in 2 more

Maybe if you happen to stumble on a great deal for a 512 x 2 kit go for it (I picked up my kit for $75 on ebay brand new)

Otherwise 2 x 1 GB kits are more "happening" at the moment. Probably explains the lower demand for the 1 GB kits.

I will eventually get a 2 GB kit myself. The Crucial Ballistix DDR2 800 kits seem the best deal at the moment if you can find them on sale.

Yes the price of DDR2 will drop back down. Its just that people went out and bough Conroe thus increasing demand.

for OCing, it is best to have 1*256mb, but there is this little thing called useability... 2*1GB is a lot easier on the memory controller than 4*512, though 2*512 is easier than 2*1GB.

it all depends on what you want. remember, 10% performance icnreases aren't nearly as noticeable as one would think(it is like goign from 120FPS to 133FPS in a game, BIG WOW not)

FYI even OEMs are catching up to us. 1 year ago people were saying 2GB should be norm, it sorta is now...

my advice if you are satisfied with good enough is to go for 2GB fo patriot LLK for 180. i got mine for 160 after mail in rebate and I must say it is fairly decent. at 1.9V it runs 667mhz 3-3-3-8 which isn't far from team xtreme's micron sets. it certainely wont' be reaching the same OCs as micron d9, but it is a good second choice from what I see. Right now I'm happily runnign them at 733mhz 1:1 5-4-3-7 1.9V 24/7 and plan to use them for a loong time. They seem 100% stable at these settings too. I'm one fo those weird freaks who always want a 5-10% margin for stability. No MAX OC for me, just 90% heh...

    Thx for all the comments

Patriot memory is not available here in Canada too so I'm stuck

I maybe find G.Skill 6400HZ but not sure if it is available.

Maybe there is a store in USA that ship to canada, if anyone knows, let me know

And yeah I though about it and I'm pretty sure that I will go with 2*1GB ... I'm in no rush to get my pc so, I'll wait maybe 1 month to see new MB coming and wish a price drop in memory.

Soooo ... if anyone here know a store in USA that ship to Canada and have some good memory like I'm looking for, let me know

The 180$ Patriot LLK sucks, Your running cas 5 and 711 mhz, thats not good in any way...

My "Slow" teamgroup pulls off cas3-2-2 stable @ 333 mhz @ 2.1v, not cas 3-3-3.

if you play alot of games. buy as much memory as possible, it will not be good for benchmarks but it'll help gaming alot.
But if benchmarking is most important for you, get 2*512MB
