I might get the thermalright HR-05 at some point so this is a good question considering I've never removable a NB heatsink before...lol.

I am thinking about removing mine to put some active cooling on, however surely you could rest an 80mm fan or something on your graphics card to cool the top one (the one just below the cpu socket)

If the northbridge is the lowest one down (the smaller heatsink) I have NO idea, the one above the PCI-E socket i got out easily, spent 5 mintues wiggling it to coax it out though, eventually got there!

The upper is the NB, the lower is the SB. NB=MCH. What's the point in positioning the MCH far from the memories?

The heatsink is mounted with push pins, isn't it? If it is, the uninstallation should be pretty straight forward. Follow the instructions in this thread. I think that there will be no problem inusing a tall heatsink since the NB is not in the way of the VC. The SB may be a little bit trickier, there you can use a low profile heatsink, maybe something like the crappy Spire VGA coolers.

push pins seem a bit harder than normal ones to remove
I had to use a pair of pliers to get mine off
