What is the most cost effective path to 3.6 Ghz for Gigabyte DS3?

Previously I was convinced that the e6400 was the way to go, but now that I see e6600 prices falling I'm beginning to think maybe that is the way to go (just because I could use cheaper memory)

So assuming I get this Thermaltake Big Typhhoon VX when it comes out should I get the e6600 simply because it will allow me to use a cheaper 2 GB memory kit. I would only need 400 FSB with the e6600 which corresponds to DDR2 800 running memory 1:1. (pretty much any memory kit should be able to do that)

Right now the cheapest I can find the e6400 is $240 delivered from Directron and the e6600 is $350 delivered (according to pricegrabber). Difference here is $110 between the two.

P.S. One more question, would it be safe to say the e6600 would be more stable clock for clock when compared to a higher FSB e6400. I really want something I can use 24/7 stable.

e6600 is easier to get 3.6ghz then the e6400. It will require less voltage, cheaper ram will work and 4mb cache :-) Go for the e6600 if you can afford it.

I agree, but then I'll probably need better memory too (capable of DDR2 1000) which somewhat cancels out the price difference. That is the paradox of overclocking in this case............ at least that is how it appears to me right now.

Hmmmmm......I wonder if the cooling requirements would be less with the e6600 too (not that I expect to get by with a stock HSF though)

if you are lucky. mine wonnt go over 3ghz on any voltage/setting/timing whatever. RAM working @ 1300Mhz, so its not the limit.

Define more stable? Heh, just funny, either its stable or its not.

If you got the cash, why not buy the E6600. Your taking your chances on how high you can OC with either one.

The 6600 is the way to go. The only allendale i'd puchase is a 6300. The 110 dollar price difference between the 6400 and 6600 will always make me lean towards the 6600.

I understand that their are other components to think about, but i'd rather spend that money on the cpu and short myself with a smaller hard drive or a case that isnt as nice. You can always upgrade those things later on.
