Thermaltakes are junk. Antec quality is not what it used to be.

OCZ makes some good ones.... 600 or 700W for decent prices. Enermax builds a good one as well:

I like the Ballistix 2x1gb kit- ..... $309 at newegg- you could spend less and be happy, but I don't skimp on memory or PSU's.

HSF- I like the Zalman 9500 or 9700 CNPS. Scythe Ninja is popular as well, but it's HUGE.

HDD- 300+gb SATAII drive... whatever size you can afford.

believe me on the PSU's...... for the money, Enermax and OCZ hold some of the best voltages under load. I've tried many PSU's running OCCT. Look at the voltage graphs after running the test. Every Antec I tried was all over the place- and had a significant drop in the voltage lines. My Enermax was the most solid and the OCZ is really good as well. For $89 the Eneermax I linked is really a great value and an even better PSU. The only reason I didn't get it for this present rig, is that it's not sleeved and I'm too lazy to sleeve it on my own although I did it with my last one. The OCZ is already sleeved.

Here's my current rig from newegg... I put it on a saved wish list and made it public. I dumped the HSF's for WC'ing..... everything else is the same. I don't have the hdd on there, but I have a Seagate 300gb SATAII and another Seagate 320gb SATAII. Seagate's have been reliable for me
and I usually stick with what I've had good luck with in the past.

This rig takes my E6400 to 3.5Ghz @ 1.47v in bios- 1.44v in CPU-Z and ASUS PC Probe- it's dual Prime 95 stable.

I recommend the ballistix kit that I have in my sig for sure. i used memtest86 up to 1080 mhz and it was perfectly stable at good timings on my p5b. once i realized i couldn't get my fsb any higher than 505 though i stopped testing.

check out this psu too. i am thinking about replacing my puny one with this.

That's exactly the same Ballistix kit I recommended. That SS PSU looks good, but a lot of modular PSU's have an inherent voltage loss across the connectors vs. a hard wired PSU.

isn't this thread suppose to be about "problem's and fixes" ??

How come there is so much 'PC Build' chat?

    SurlyPlatypus,

Thanx for the tips. While the mobo and CPU could benchmark and load windows fine at 3.6ghz, they were running hot , peaking > 70.

ATM 3.37 ghz seems to be the highest Orthos Stable clock I can reach without getting more cooling.
The mobo and cpu seem capable of handling much more so i guess ill need a water cool upgrade to truly test how much they can handle but im quite happy with how they have performed.
Im about to update the BIOS now to 0804.
Ive been reading some of the stickies but I dont feel comfortable enough yet tweaking my mem timings since these OCZ timing seem relatively odd.
Also it seems clear, cooling should be my next step.

Have you done any stress testing yet? Doing Orthos or duel instances of Prime will test your CPU Cores at 100%. You should be able to run for over 2 hours without getting too hot. Your at 52c at idle right now... You have to be comfortable with the temps. The E6600 is rated for 60c max.

You are down rev on the BIOS. Update that to 0804. I've seen that 0903 is out but it's not on ASUS so it must be a beta version (anyone have a comment on 903 and whether to get/use it or not?)

Are all of your BIOS settings the defaults other than the FSB and Memory timings? There are good stickies on starting settings and how to tweek.

Ghostwind you got pc8000 that can run 500fsb 1:1.

Just put stock timings in and youll be ready to go to 500Mhz, youll never reach that with your cpu on 9 multi though. So either you put your multi down which will stress your NB, or you put your memory on an upward divider.

PM me your email- I'll send it to you. The tab is $1400... including a BenQ 21" LCD and all parts needed if you were starting from nothing. Add $300 for the watercooling I have, but either one of the HSF's I'll send you will do the job.

    P5b Mem Dividers

Hey everyone ive been having some problems ocing my new conroe build.

P5b Deluxe bios 0804 with TT Big Typhoon (idle 40 load 47+)
    E6300
    Patriot ddr2-800mhz @ 5-5-5-12
    Evga 7900 gto
    Corsair hx 520

Right now my cpu is running at 2.8 (400x7) and is completely stable with dual orthos runnin for 12 hours. Once i start pushing my fsb higher than 400 though my mem seems to get overclocked past 800 mhz and creates instabilities. I tried lowering the speed through the dram frequency option in the bios but it wont let me go below 800mhz at 400 fsb. How do i set up mem dividers so i can push my fsb higher?

The most forgiving divider you can do is 1:1, which at 400 mhz is the spec for your RAM.

What you want to do is thoroughly test the RAM using memtest at a low fsb and higher divider until you get a feel for its limitations. Only then start to overclock, because you will know when the RAM is holding you back and when it is something else.

You may want to increase the RAM voltage a couple notches over spec to what you feel comfortable with before you begin. Be forewarned that some RAM gives good results using voltage, but some just sucks no matter what you try.

Or you could ebay the 6400 ram you have and buy the kit I got off newegg.com for 309$

    Question STOP: 0x0000007b error

The problem is that when trying to install XP i get a BSOD after the installation files have been copied. The error reads "STOP: 0x0000007b".

    My config:
    WD SATA HDD
    ROM IDE unit
    Core 2 Duo E6600
    Corsair xms2 (4-4-4-12) 800Mhz

So I figure thats the only thing that should be of interest.
I have tried 2 other sata hdd drives and one sata2 drive, same error. I have also tried another DVD rom and a CD-RW ROM (all IDE) same result. I have one pair of the momory and I have tried in in both dual channel banks and single in all slots.

Really, It can't be this hard to install XP on a SATA from an IDE drive can it?

I need help, as I have no idea what to do next.

I have tried everything in BIOS but nothing seems to help.
THe XP installation is XP Pro with SP2, I have also tried XP home with the same result.

    Im desperate.
Has anyone found a solution to this problem? I have the same one! I get the STOP: 0x0000007b error when I try to install Windows XP Pro SP2 with all the latest updates. I do not understand as my Windows Pro installation DVD will install successfully using my older PC (it is a burnt copy). Do you think the Core 2 Duo processors or Asus mobos detect "illegal" copies of the disk and this is why? Something is fishy here...

Should I install Windows with this old machine and transfer the HDD over to the new one? If so, how would I do that? Will the P5B board recognize the partition and boot it if the partition was installed with a different board and Intel P4 chip (right now I have a copy of my brother's Windows XP SP2 Home running on this new machine)?

I wonder if I downgrade my BIOS back to 0302 it may work, however, Asus Update will not allow me to downgrade! So, I have not been able to try that yet. Ugh.

    Intel E6600
Asus P5B Deluxe Wi-Fi, BIOS ver. 0804 (previously stock at 0302)
    A-Data Vitesta 2x512 800Mhz

Was the Asus P5B a bad decision? Is it really riddled with this many problems (2500+ posts in "Asus P5B-Deluxe; Problems & Fixes")

    What am I to do?

I have heard about this problem and have the same setup myself: SATA HDD and two IDE DVD/RW drives. However, my Win XP home installed perfectly on the first try, no errors. It is strange that not everyone has this problem.

Just wanted to put another post saying "My P5B Deluxe runs perfectly".

    E6600
    P5B Deluxe
    4x1GB Patriot (PEP21G6400LL)
    320GB Seagate 7200.10 (RAID 1)

I don't have BSOD problems (during install either), I don't have the 1x Link problem, no problems whatsoever after a week now.....other than the Vcore droop, which isn't much of a problem. This is a great and stable mobo.

To each their own. Run OCCT and look at the voltage rail graphs on that Thermatake. My Enermax and OCZ hold to less than 1%.... more like 0.5%. My Antec could barely hold 3%.

just dropped in my new QX6700 and began testing.

Been experimenting with different FSB and multipliers but cant seem to get Windows to load when I am over 400 FSB, even with multiplier down.
Ive tried sending different voltages to memory but that didnt seem to help, how do you set up your Mem voltages?
Also, do you let Asus set RAM speed on Auto or do you adjust manually?

I havent yet tried using upward memory divider, didnt see that in BIOS so I will look into that again.
Otherwise I cant seem to load in Windows with FSB greater than 350-360.

Going to keep reading threads, thanx for tips, anything else is greatly appreciated.

Also curious about new BIOS that was posted, may try that later night.

Hi, I just got a SATA hard drive(Maxtor Diamondmax 9) and I am unsure of how to install windows onto it. I have it connected to the red Sata port#1 and I just want to install windows on it. Can anyone walk me through it? Are there any floppy drivers that i have to install first?

U only need the floopy drivers if u enable ahci in the bios.

Dont set the memory divider at auto, select the lowest option for 1:1.
Before u play with cpu, I d recommend u to do some memtesting/memory overclocking. This is only to ensure.

350-360= thats true, this board has some issues around that fsb.

Anyway, keep the multiplier at 10x. And, stick with bios 0804, till asus releases it officially.

What is the rest of ur sig? DO u already have other harddisks/ running raid arrays?

That Diamondmax9 has sata2 features, which can be enabled by setting to AHCI mode. To do that, u ll be needing a raid/ahci driver (on a floppy, which u can download at asus.com)

my systems consists of a p5b-d wifi, 2gb of crucial ballistix ram, an E6400, and a nec dvd burner along with the maxtor hard drive. i just have one hard drive installed in it and it is the maxtor which i am trying to load windows onto. i have gotten to the screen where it finishes loading drivers and then it goes to "setup is loading windows" then it just stops and doesn't go further. Is there an F6 driver i should load for installing a single sata drive?

EDIT: Nevermind, I got it to work.
