Did I get a lousy CPU?

Running an E6400 and a vanilla P5B. Tried overclocking with both the 0211 and 0213 bioses, have not gone all the way back to 0170 yet.

Thought a nice easy spot to start for the overclock would be running 333 FSB. Ram running at 5-5-5-15, 1:1 ratio, CPU clock is 2.66 ghz. It's not even close to prime stable - errors out within 2-3 minutes. Tried upping the voltage all the way to 1.40 before I gave up. Currently priming at 2.5 ghz instead (313 FSB).

Is it really possible that this chip didn't even have the headroom to get to 2.66? Or am I missing something dumb?

sounds like the mobo IMO, e6400 across the board are ocing to 3ghz+. it all comes down to the mobo.

I agree that it's not your cpu..

    Ex:

Disable: Hyperpath, Dram Thermal Throttling, Speedstep, C1, TM, Virtualization. Lock PCI at 33.3, PCIE at 100.
stuff goes here.. etc etc.. i win.. lalala.. pwn etc

No, that won't be the CPU. Likely some setting in the motherboard holding you back.

I have a 6400 as well. With the P5W DH I could only get 2.6 prime stable. I switched to the DS3 and I am at 3Ghz no problem. I think I can get 3.2 stable with a little more voltage.
