$100 Laptop/Child - No More Crappy Hand Crank

    http://www.technologyreview.com/read...94&ch=infotech

The new generators, which will be field-tested beginning this October, abandon the bulky and inefficient hand-crank design featured on an early mock-up of the laptop in favor of a more compact off-laptop design that uses a pull string to spin a small generator. It was developed by Squid Labs, Emeryville, CA, a design and engineering group whose co-founders include several graduates of MIT's Media Lab, where the laptop project originated.

The price of reliability is the pursuit of the utmost simplicity. It is a price which the very rich find most hard to pay.

looks like no real hard drive space... It's only equiped with 500mb of flash memory. Of course, it'll boot fast.

Well with current technology levels you can get dead cheap string that won't break. If you pull it hard enough to break it the entire laptop falls apart so the string really isn't the issue :P

I wish I could get a string operated power device for my laptop. Too bad my dual core Yonah laptop eats up about 35 watts whilst doing something like notepad. Would be a nice achiefment to get 35 watts of continuous power out of something operated by a string. (And not have somebody pulling the string ever 2 secs :P)

All in: This is a nice project, I don't really know if it will have a positive effect but it's a nice project anyways.

The world: Because the whole world hates you, and you don't even know why!

I see what I see, and you see what you see. I can't make you see what I see, but I can tell you what I see is not what you see. Truth is, we see what we want to see, and what we want to see is what those around us see. And what we don't see is... well, conspiracies.

wrap some coils under each key in the keypad so when they are pressed they slide in/out of a gap causing a bit of electrical current.

should generate a watt or two depending how much you type...

All along the watchtower the watchmen watch the eternal return.

So now instead of a $100 laptop, we have a $5000 one

Great, first a flash light you have a jerk off to get it to work, now a laptop where you gotta pull a string to get it to work.... wtf is going on these days?

That´s why they changed the crank, because if it break they wouldn´t be able to replace it. Using a string you can replace it even with a shoe lace.

You mean pr0n isn't basic education?
Use in a cool dry place away from direct sunlight. Keep out of reach of n00bs. Overclock within 24 hours of opening.
Do not read instructions before proceeding, do not use only as directed. May cause frustration, late nights and empty wallets.
If symptoms persist please consult your hardware professional.
