a new guy on the block

I'm fairly new to this and looking for some help with this thing. I have just built myself a new machine (i think) and trying to get the most out of the Operton, MSI MB, and OCZ RAM. I'm having alot of problems with it though.

    1. RAM wont show up as Dual Channel in CPU-z

    2. Operton wont run over 2.6 stable.

should i get rid of the MSI board and go for a DFI board????? i'm starting to get frustrated so any help will be appreciated

For my personal experience, I had the MSI board and could not take full advantage of my FX-55 and memory. I took back to the store for a store credit and order the DFI Expert. The best decision made. right of the back my fx-55 went to 2.85 from 2.65. Then I order me an Opty 165 and look at my sig. Not saying that it will not work for you but life turned for the better. Took me longer to tweak my system with the expert but the end results are much much better "FOR ME"
For you to run that 165 higher you will need to enter the 300+ fsb world and IMO nothing gets closer to the DFI. Also the DFI forum is very active helping others.

Please post your cpu stepping and your ram specs.

    more info

    ok so here it goes.........

i have put the CPU FSB clock at 280 which CPU clocks in at 2.53 Ghz.

also. i moved the jumper and boosted my voltage to 3.4 V on the RAM. as a side note, i moved the ram closed to the CPU and wouldnt boot to Win XP.

i can get the voltage to 1.8V at the vCore.

back the voltage off of that core... pronto. I never suggest going above ~1.65. The memory controller is the weak link, and has the possibility of frying at around 1.6. Most won't go at that level, but do not exceed 1.7, at any time

This ram is not bh-5 modules, those modules max should be no more than 2.85v and you are at 3.4 they are probably dead by now and if not, they will be soon if you leave @ 3.4v.

Your cpu stepping is not a GREAT overclocker. The multy is LOCKED at 9x just like ALL 165 OPTYs. (165=9x / 170=10x / 175=11x / 185=12x)
Your board is not the overclockers dream but with that cpu stepping IMO buying another board will not get you much better than 2.6 ghz.

I would not go any higher than 1.55v on the vcore and that is, if you have an aftermarket heatsink and fan.

p.s Look at my sig format and update your sig with the information of your rig, that way we can help you better

    and please read this: http://www.msi.com.tw/html/service/t...7220/page1.htm

and there is no need to get a DFI. this board (once you get used to it) has just as good if not better results than the DFI boards.

I was just giving you a hard time doogs. Hope you get everything working. CCBWE's aren't known for crazy ocing. 2.6 is the norm for those.

yea man, you definatly need to be more careful raising the voltages. unfortunatly lethal voltage won't cause the system to shut down safely, it will just kill components. you're going to end up destroying some new hardware.

2.8 is probably safe, but maybe a little overkill? repo could probably give you better advice on the RAM.

the CCBWE 0607UPGW is notably weak, so you're going to have trouble getting stable over 2.6ghz
