    7900GT 512MB or 7900GTX 512MB

I'm currently compiling my gear for my first "major" rig.

I've never really had the cash to go pursuing high-end stuff and reading here for ages and then joining has made me more eager to get the optimal performance for my bucks.

Anyways, I have a dreadful system now (see sig), and I'm new to OC'ing (GPU wise I'm fine bar volts and I've only ever switched the FSB up on my chip by 15mhz!) - So my new rig will be built around the E6600 w/ Tuniq tower inside the Antec P180.

I know that DX10 is on it's way, but for me I won't touch it till this time next year at the earliest (unless I break into some cash!) and I've never had a system that really is "At the highest end".

So here are 2 links. I'd like your opinions on two things please.

    1) What you recommened I should get? Is there much difference?
    2) Which of them (from reviews or your own experiences) overclocks the most - I'm looking to just push it a little extra. Not loads. Just a little.

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=420928

    http://www.techfever.co.uk/products.asp?partno=5177

I have to admit I'm really undecided. They are both so awesome for their price! - PLEASE HELP!

thanks guys, as always, you're the dogs balls.

I don't think you understand me right.

It's about is the price difference worth the gain? and is one or the other more overclockable?

I've read so many reviews and listened to people who say that it's for a few FPS that I'll be getting the GTX. Not worth it... so the £80 saved can go directly towards my next upgrade.

Unless you are saying the 7900GTX (listed above) completely batters the 7900GT (listed above)

id put the money in a new monitor from your specs

i my self am getting 2 7900gt 512mb cards i know i have other options but my logic is i can get 2 cards that i can water cool!
so,,, if you are wanting 1 card then for future upgrade-ability id go for the better of the 2, just because of your brand of 7900gt i have not myself heard of, so I and would pay the extra 80beans for a name brand
if you dont upgrade for a while then the better card will be better for longer

but not to be a w-a-n-k-e-r but your machine could use some money elsewhere. so...
also for the same price you can get a good x1900 ati card that would beat the both of them

all and all you need to decide for yourself

Since the 7900gt 512mb cards are basically the same as the 256mb versions in terms of modding (silverglue, no soldering needed) I'd go for the 512mb version
The GTX is just a tad too expensive for my liking
A friend of mine has 2 GT cards in SLI running at 650/1800 24/7... let me tell you that gaming runs quite smooth on his rig, despite the fact that he has "only" a 3Ghz Opteron

Friend: Do you have a spare PSU lying around?
    Me: No why?
Friend: My PSU just blew up, I think the second 8800GTX might have been too much for it to handle
Me: what PSU was that again?
    Friend: Antec 480w
    Me:........

XPERTVISION is the Gainward board basically. The one here: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatal...aGX_2d033_2dGW

It's the same reference boards the lot. Just cheaper.

@ Billdavies I don't get how you can say my machine needs money elsewhere when I have only said 3 things of the whole rig!

My monitor is the VX922 (due to me not having much space to play with here) and I'm looking for a decent 650w+ PSU.

Memory is this (I'm buying two, so i''l have 4GB): http://www.overclockers.co.uk/cgi-bi...&ACTION=Search

I was in the exact same position as you about a week ago. I had to decide between the 7900GTX and the 7900GT. The ATI cards are just too noisy for my liking and run much hotter so I didn't considered getting one. As you can see in my sig I decided on the 7900GT, mainly for 2 reasons:

    1) DX10 cards are launching at the end of the year and spending so much for a GTX wasn't worth it.

    2) But since I will probably skip the first gen DX10 cards, I needed a nice card to run my games on high settings until the second gen which will be out around this time next year.
So, I settled for the 7900GT 512MB and I have no regrets.

I suggest you do the same, even more so if you plan to get one of the first gen DX10 cards.

If I were to get a first generation DX10 GPU at the end of the year I would have bought the 7600GT instead.

    @ billdavis - What you mean DDR2? Seach for " Corsair 2GB DDR2 XMS2-6400C4 TwinX (2x1GB) (MY-108-CS) £169.95 " <--- thats them. I'm getting 2x them, hence 4GB through 4 sticks all OC'd to 800mhz.

@ Mr.X - Very helpful waht you're saying here. So you reckon go for the Xpertvision for £215 eh?

your sig shows asrock K7S8X wich uses
    - DDR 266 Max. 3GB
    - DDR 333 Max. 2GB
    - DDR 400 Max. 1GB
    - DDR 3 x DDR, DDR400/333/266

so im wondering what the ddr2 is for

    BILL - Nooooooooooooooo.

That sig is my current crap system. It's so f'kin useless even the DDR333 memory (3 different sticks) I have is running at DDR266!!! - And it just reboots if I try to put it right!

You really think that I'd upgrade that system? Where is a conroe gonna go on a MOBO that is almost 4 years old? lol.

I am going with the 7900GT. Either that or 2x DDR3 7300GT's. In SLi they are meant to be awesome and for £120 for the 2 of them. UBER VALUE!

I my self got a 7900GT but 256MB only as i could not justify the cost for the 7900GTX altho i can afford it but id rather save the cash for the 2nd gen of DX10 videocards that come out.

That's what I thought as well. Only difference is that I got the 512MB version so that I don't have any bad surprises (games that require 512MB to run on max settings).

I insist on my suggestion: get the 7900GT 512MB and spend the rest somewhere else. I don't know the performace difference between the GT and the GTX but I know that the GT is a great card and it will keep you happy until your next upgrade. Even if you decide to skip DX10 first gen, you can easily get a second used 7900GT and run them on SLI.

    Just my 2 cents.

Forget Nvidia and get a X1900XT. Also you don't need 4GB of memory, it's just waste of money considering that your just going to play games with your comp. If you have made your mind buying a 7900 series card I recommend getting the 7900GT 512MB and OC the crap out of it

Oh, yeah that too! Why would you want 4GB ram anyway?

the only reason to have alot of ram is for the faster load time

    moonraker a avarage e-VGA 7900gt 256 stock speed gets 4600 in 3dmark06 e-VGA 7900gt ko 512 gets 5600 stock speed

i dont have a 7900gtx to test but i understand they @stock speeds get ~6200

From 2GB->4GB I doubt you won't see any real improvement in loading times.

I say X1800XT for around $200-$250. Price can't be beat by any 7900gt. get the X1800XT 512mb if you can but for the price the 256mbs are amazing.

If looking performance with pre overclocked 7900GT 512MB card and X1800XT 512MB the 7900GT is the best but if you have a chance to get the X1800XT 512MB cheap it isn't bad choice either.

What? The 7900gt can be volt modded but at stock the X1800XT wins by a decent margin. Also you don'thave to hard mod the X1800Xt. I like that a lot. Plus it seems like price is a factor. Volt modding is kinda risky so if it dies...

If you are planning to go SLI down the road, get the 512mb 7900gt to save money.

If you arent, the 7900GTX is the one you want.

I would advise not going for nVidia if you must get a high end card. The IQ aint as good as ATI's, they can't do HDR+FSAA and they are buggy. The ATI cards are louder and hotter but they do perform better with more features (aside from their crap drivers).

To be honest you should get SLI 7300GT. They are cheap and can perform quite well. Also it'll save you money to go towards a DX10 card which will be much better then the current cards.

    NoPeace - out
