    Is Conroe E6700 ES B0 stepping new or old? Unlocked or locked?

    I can get a Conroe E6700 ES B0 Stepping. Just wondering if this is a new stepping or old one?

    What is the difference between A1, B0, B1 and Stepping 5?

    Are Conroe E6700 ES unlocked or locked? I am told that the Conroe E6700 ES is unlocked but the retail E6700 is locked.

    I thought B0 = B1

    B0 is pre sale version (ES)
    B1 is retail version

    I am chatting with a local hardware reviewer and he tells me:

    B2 = Multiplier Locked version (retail)
    B1 = Media Sample
    B0 = Pre-Sales version (unlocked multiplier 6x to 10x)

    So much confusion about the stepping.

    May be the new CPU-Z revision can solve all the confusion.

    What did they have to fix in B1 before making B2?

    That means B0 also has the bug which didn't get fixed in B2.

    So getting a B1 sample or B2 retail is better than B0 sample?

    Since B1 = B2 (more or less)

    B0 only has unlocked multipliers.

    B0 is old and is the same as stepping 4. It is stamped A4 on the chip but everything identifies it as B0. It's definitely old, at least a couple of months. This is what I have (it's a 6400) and although the BIOS options to unlock the multi are there and can be set, it won't POST if I increase the multi, even just from x8 to x9 (the same percentage increase works fine if I do it with the FSB). Maybe I just don't know what I'm doing but I haven't seen anyone overclocking their ES chips with the multi, just the FSB, even people whose CPUs can go faster but they have memory or northbridge problems holding them back. So I would not count on having unlocked multi on the ES chips except of course the XE which are also unlocked for retail.

    Reading what FCG says above it looks like the ES chips have multiplier unlocked down only (set it anywhere from 6 to whatever it normally is) which, well, I've verified this works, but it's not of any use

    Wish somebody knew what the B0/B1 bug was other than that it is minor. Intel said the FDIV bug on the original Pentium was minor and they ended up having to do a recall for it so I don't really know what "minor" means to them

    In that case I think I better just get the Conroe XE X6800 Stepping 5.

    Conroe XE (ES) Stepping 5 is okay right?

    With EIST you should be able to change multipliers down, just like on AMD's K8. Or am I wrong?

    ES is supposed to be a test CPU to show off Intel's performance. The chips can be crappy or really good. These aren't for sale... or atleast aren't supposed to be.
