    Conroe (Core 2 Duo) Cooling: Who wins ?

    Hey all,

    Update:

    I have purchased (as in my sig) a P5W DH and Ultra 120 (with Li Lian 120mm fan ~1300 rpm). Cooling with my P-D 805 @ 3.3ghz (1.4125 V) seems to be around 45c idle and 60C load. Case fans are 2 x Nexus 120mm at ~7v.

    Opening Post:

    Just wondering what people think of the following coolers and if they were about the same fan speed, who would win (be coolest). One of these will be used on (i hope) a Asus P5B Deluxe. I'm aiming on taking a E6600 to around 3.2 - 3.5Ghz or more if i can get it .

    my pc stock intel cooler:

    idle = 40°C
    100% load = 75°C

    zalman CNPS9500:

    idle = 33°C
    100% load = 52°C

    For the price of the Zalman CNPS9500 you can get a better cooler.
    Zalman CNPS9500 performs about the same as an Arctic Freezer 7 Pro, but is 2 times the price

    Between those two, I would choose the Thermalright Ultra-120.

    Actually that is incorrect.. I just upgraded from a Freezr 7 Pro to a CNPS 9500 AT (the slightly cheaper 775 only model with no LED's). And My load tempurature is not @ 46C rather then 53C (same overclock and voltages as before). And the room tempurature is up a couple degrees over before. So if you ask me... The CNPS 9500 AT is an awesome cooler.

    Yes, I remember someone telling me it does not direct airflow onto the voltage regulators and mosfetts... I use this fan on a 65nm D960 and idle temps are held at 44 deg celius, but also use Arctic Silver 5 thermal paste. I know it's not conroe, but the results speak for themselves - 3 heatpipes coiled to form 6 pipes from the block! Why would anyone not consider using this all copper heat sink as a great heat dispersing solution? This thing spits the heat out the rear case exhaust whereas vertical airflow circulates the CPU's hot air messily aroung the place. I think well done Zalman!

    As for the voltage regulators, you can mount a blower fan onto a small plastic box, velcroe the box to the bottom of the case. Cut two pieces of (good looking) compressor hose and push them into holes you have made in the bottom/side of the plastic box, then form those two into one, so it looks like a small car extractor as an example. This will help the fan move the air through the hoses better from the box. From that, run a single piece of compressor hose off to the ram and voltage regulators (splitting them again of course.) It won't look bodge of you do it neatly. For better results use flexible plastic metal lathe nozzles that can be adjusted to direct this air flow. At least the CPU heat is out of the case and the blower noise can be tamed by adjustment of it. Also, the Zalman CNPS9500 horizontal air flow is not disrupted by turbulance from any case side fans, thus diverting and circulating hot air back into the case rather than out the rear exhaust where it should be going :-)

    Thats my solution, does anyone understand this and willing to try it? Overclocker using air cooling will appreciate the advantages.

    Only reason I didn't add the Zalman 9500 is because, a. you can't replace the fan (easily) and b. I do believe it being replaced wit the Zalman 9700 soon.

    WHAT!?.... It takes two seconds to change the FAN....

    Either way my 9500 cools my Dothan at 2.8Ghz just fine... It never goes above 40ÂşC, its usually at 33ÂşC at full load (Temperature varies with ambient)....

    Has anyone tried to mount two fans on a Tower 120? Does that work? I just ordered a Delta 120 mm fan and I was thinking about replacing the tower one.

    Here at XS, the favorite lately has been the Tuniq Tower 120. You'll see all the Xtreme benchers when testing on air use the Tower. They are hard as heck to get though...

    I was about to buy a Thermaltake BT, but i guess you guys recommend the Tuniq T-120 over that?

    If true, i will get that instead. How much cooler is it than the Thermaltake BT?

    we also have to consider the very crowded board around the socket. Some very nice Cooler wouldn't be able to fit because of that.

    The Tuniq Tower 120 is the best, hands down. Not the quietest, but great for extreme overclocking. Hard to find right now. It fits fine on the Intel Bad Axe board which has a lot of capacitors around the socket. Should fit on most other S775 boards too.

    Scythe Mine III.

    It has the best socket 775 mount of any HSF, performs very close to the Tuniq without the mass, and has a superior fan mounting system over the Ninja +.

    Replace the stock 100mm fan with a YL 120 and you'll have a top notch HSF that's effective and quiet.
