Latest revision Conroe 6700 - step 5 - quick test

Having a B0 stepping 6700 ES myself I have been spoiled with the power of an ES with downwards open multis.

After pluggin it in - it turns out no open downards multis

Booting her up into Windows went fine - but CPUz showed something new:
(BTW - that scrreny was under stock everything - vcore 1.4V / stock Intel aircooler ...)

Here a CPUz of the previous stepping 4:

The above screenshot was done with a single stage and was the max of my Rev B0 stepping 4 CPU. 3.68ghz was all she can handle....

Looks like the stepping 5 CPU might be a "release sample" of the actual retail CPU. Not sure - but just my guess. Putting the stepping 5 ( Rev. C1? ) under the test to see how it will compare to the old B0 I put it under the same Chilly1 single stage and got this out of it:

4.25GHZ with 1.55V vcore. pretty impressive on the step 5 - at least to me. Had access to quiet a few Conores but this one topped 'em all easily. 4.2GHZ was also 3Dmark01 stable - what I had needed Ln2 before on my B0....

Well a bit of LN2 on this stepping 5 got me only up to 4.45GHZ - but I don't think the CPU was holding me back - but rather the motherboard. 425FSB seemed to be the max on my current board ( might have been the reason for 4.25GHZ only ) - only freezing the Northbridge allowed me to get a tad bit higher to ~ 445.

Obviously all the above runs were not tweaked and optimzed - so please make no fun of the times - this weekend hopefully I have more time ( and a better board!!!) to get things flying ... Breaking 70K on a single GFX will be my goal - here's a teaser with a STOCK 7900GTX : http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k1=8994597

Well before that it will have to do a 24hour Rosetta session - hint hint...http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...d.php?t=100731

The Conroe future is looking better with every new revision! While there have been a few incredible air clockers been published here in the forums - I had managed to run quiet a few of the older steppings - and from my experience - the Step 5 is a nice step up to an even better Conroe

Maybe it's just me, but I don't see too much of an improvement with LN2

mikeguava, don't you think it will be possible to change the multipliers with the help of EIST, when updated software will allow that?

    OMG. Stepping 5 ROCKS!

Will we have downward multis with later BIOS/software? I thought downward multis were a reuirement for EIST.

Didn't have time to look into it deeply - but can you verify the multi actually changing with CPUZ?

I tired Crystal once - but didn't update the multi ( according to CPUZ)

I only looked into it briefly -maybe Crystal cpuid didn't work for me because of a Bios setting ( EIST setting ) - but will look into it later. IIRC there wasn't a EIST setting in the BIOS for this CPU ( but others) but that wasn't my focus at the time.

For sure the BIOS option to change multi with this particluar stepping dissapeared. Not too bug of an issue at all.

@ Crotale - looks like Dumo already got it working.

Stepping 5 is most probably what we will have in store in 1 month. Look to be a nice chip. Sad you got "ripped off", but still, you have a damn fast conroe

    I think "ripped"

@ Dumo - maybe I'll have to try an earlier Version of Crystal CPUID - with the latest version I get this:

It's either Crystal CPUID or my BadAxe bios 11?? VS your 908

EIST on/off in BIOS has no impact ( remains on no matter what...)

    Thanks!

Try BIOS 1181 as 0908 may not have the proper microcode list for this newest stepping.

Have you enabled EIST in BIOS and attempted to change the multi using the field there? Should be selectable if you short the OC DEBUG pins to "unlock" the BIOS. Also, may want to try flashing to 1181...

The only thing that bothers me is locked vid in bios with 304. probly I have to connect the debug pins.

Yes - for sure you have to connect the debug pins - had mine come loose several times - and lost the VID options

Couldn't find your version anymore - any chance you can host it?

Looks like Dumo found the solution for us!

actually running 1181 - and OC debug pins are shorted. Thanks to your nifty guide! I had swithced back between step 4 B0 and this new step 5 - to verify that the Bios didn't have to do anything with it. Step 4 - change Multi was possible.

I tried enabling and dis-sabling EIST in BIOS with no effect ( actually EISToff will still keep it on in WIndows )
