If that is their answer to Conroe? Then the total costs for an AMD systems is going to be really high...

Umm ... somebody did mention that the new high end gaming setups for QuadSLI/SLI/CF would go dual proccesor. Maybe this is just earlier than expected.

By 4*4 they mean 2 sockets and 4 cores ? either way it's going to be a nice perfomance boost to see 2* dual channel DDR2 mobos, 4*1GB sticks of DDR2 memory @ 1T ....

So this wont be like a server rig, needing ECC memory etc?

    Here we go again!

Hopefully Vista2 will need OctalSLI, 64Tb of RAM, 250Gb for the \Windows\ folder and 16 QC Processors to play Solitaire. But of course, it'll have AA, HQAF, Bump Mapping, HDR, etc.

That for almost 90% of the gaming people playing at 1280x or 1024x. *sigh*

This abomination has no chance whatsoever against Core 2 Duo - that is if this thing would actually be real.

    Dual AMD DC system:
    - dual socket board 300-400€
    - 2 DC procs 600€-2000€
    - dram >300€
    - high quality & wattage PSU >>200€
    - huge power consumption and thermal output
    - PITA to OC
    - no gain for single threading, useless quad thread perf increase
    - 1200-2700€+ total

    Basic Core 2 Duo system:
    - board 200€
    - proc >300€
    - dram >200€
    - basic PSU
    - simple as 1-2-3 to OC
    - great for benching and single/dual threading
    - ~700€ total
You were not supposed to see this.

    Quad damage!
    weyland.be | system specs

I'll eat my shorts when AMD/ATI can come out with something that can counter an C2DX8000 with QuadSLI 7950GX2 on a Intel 975X chipset board when official Forceware drivers come through.

For this new platform to be competitive it should use unbuffered memory and the CPU's should be priced accordingly. Nobody wants to buy a technology today that will only proove a performance enchancement in six months time when it will be outdated anyways. If this is to succed AMD is compeled to play the "double the core (performance?!) for the same money" card.

BlackX: 256-bit memory sure would be nice and all. But probably a PITA to design and implement (otherwise we'd probably already have it).

erm, we have qdr in ddr2 as well, can have quad drives in raid as well.
i must say though, this is realy dumb, i would only have 3 uses at the most; folding, encoding audio, video encoding/editing and i hardly ever do the last two now...

I like the sound of this, MM rocked '06 with 2xOpterons @ 3.1Ghz, so hopefully these mobo's will OC better and we'll see 4 cores at 3.5Ghz+ on these boards

    Much more info here:

    http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=2638

The new 4x4 platform will feature two dual-core chips coupled with a dual-socket capable motherboard. AMD will also be releasing a new enthusiast focused chipset for the market, which is designed to take non-ECC unbuffered DDR memory. The new motherboards will be AM2 based, and take new AM2 FX-62 and higher -- all AM2 Athlon FX processors will have at least two cores.

AMD says that 4x4 is not simply workstation and server technology reduced down to consumer level, but is in fact, a whole new design. The company indicated that the new 4x4 chipset will be able to allow each processor core to have direct access to memory, and to have direct access to each other. The technology is called Direct Connect, and according to AMD, will be able to give huge boost to performance over traditional multi-socket platforms.
Maybe should have made a new thread..

What next? Quad PSUs to power rigs that consume insane amounts of power.

i gues they are mainly aiming this towards companys that want the power of 4 cores (opteron 2xx series) but have no need for expensive buffered ram or whatever.
I doubt this is aimed at the home user/gamer.

You know, if they can get reverse hyperthreading on this new "platform", conroe gets buried.

4 cores(8 when K8L comes out) working on 1 thread would leave a 5-8(4 core) second pie time, stock.

Let us not forget mickey mouses 2x opteron 285 cpu scores.

Essentially, you could pick up 2 x2 3800+'s and maul the high end anything in any multithreaded app. Wouldn't need insane power either, they got the ultra efficient chips too.

just for the enthusiast desktop market

    It will:
...take new AM2 FX-62 and higher...
And it's a AMD chipset? Will it support SLI or Crossfire? It must. Spendy. Bookoo power consumption for CPUs, add quad SLi and you need a 2K watt PSU.

heres a few facts to debunk a crapload of misconception: first, quad sli does not suck up more power than regular sli, although so far quad sli does suck in other ways. you wont need a 2kw psu, or even a 1kw. two fx62s wont consume terrible amounts of power, slightly more than a pd ee... as to the actual topic, this new platform is very very interesting in another way: remember hearing about those co-processors? for very high end desktop tasks, they can be ridiculously good. they can sell co-processors for what you do, gaming, encoding, etc... so that means that if you game a lot but dont give too much of a crap about encoding, you can have an already powerful processor for encoding even if you change your mind, and absolutely mind boggling performance for games. its very high end, but hey, it keeps the enthusiasts interested. if amd actually starts using this for lower end chips when k8l comes around, intel will get decimated... this is being overly optimistic, but hey, its not ridiculous considering the other rumours out there...

desperate move by AMD, Conroe is tough to beat, so they figure 2 is greater than 1
