Which manufacturer is going to be ready with 5850/5870 blocks?

I hope some of you guys have samples of these boards already. Or at least dimensions.

I am hoping to get a HD5870x2 with a nickel plated EK block to replace my HD4870x2 that has a DD block on it.

Nickel plated blocks are so much prettier than exposed copper blocks which are susceptible to tarnishing and oxidation.

it's always a race to come out with a waterblock first the a new GPU, but i think they have to wait for it to launch to get dimensions. there's never a case where the block comes out the same day the card launches.

I'm more interested on the GPU only block and unisink support. Gabe, are you planning uni-sinks for these new cards?

I don't know about "the same", but [H]ocp had some pictures yesterday of the GPU area. And most GPU only blocks have enough flexibility in their mounting to make any variance a non-issue.

Unisinks are an interesting option too... any plans on expanding into that territory dean?

4870 vs 5870. Looks the same to me.

    +1

I much prefer the unisink + gpu block options makes my setup a little more future proof...

I have heard that the mounting holes seem to be the same, so the current GPU only blocks should fit. I'm more curious about the heatsink plates for passively cooling the rest of the board.

The race is on. Looks like Dean is in the lead so far with a web page awaiting a product with price and details. Eddy whatcha got cooking on your end of the track? I am sure Gabe will have a unisink out soon enough as those mounts look the same for the water block.

lol... as for a "uni-sink" its been discussed, we haven't really had a demand for it though.

    Bad to hear that really

Performance between full cover and gpu + heatsink are equal, but, the second one, at last have one part that you can reuse.

With full cover you simply cant . . . perhaps they look better, but now that vgas last only half an year, they dont look like a "better looking" option to me

I didn't say it wasn't worth looking at, just not many people asking us for it. In fact you three/four are the first to really bring it up to me. We'll see, the video card market is pretty hectic the past two years lol.

Exactly.. and individual heatsinks are a pain.. I've done that with my 8800GT SLI setup and have had to deal with the pain of one of them falling off (and they never stay on as good ever again).. and if they do fall off, they risk shorting whatever is below it.. so I'll definitely never do individual sinks on GPU again but I absolutely would love a screw-on unisink

$30-40 is a lot easier to stomach then $100-200

Another thing to consider dean.. or gabe.. or anyone whose on the ball with unisinks... ASUS has announced their TOP version of the 5870 (and 5850 later I assume) which will allow software voltage tweaks.. now this might mean non-reference PCB which puts the full-block option a pain for both you and the consumer, but a uni-sink is a lot better approach. Not to mention, it allows adding a fan onto the vrm area for additional cooling if needed...

correct me if I'm wrong, but no full-cover gpu that I've seen yet has flow over the VRM's

    My advice to you guys

for your best chance at not getting a block that wont fit your card.

    Adopt earily.

After that its like playing a lottery.

Couldn't disagree more. Comparing aesthetics of a unisink to a board specific block is like comparing my built Eagle Talon to a Ferrari F430. Sure they preform on par with each other, but the Ferrari is just dead sexy
