Saw a forum post from 2008 saying to tick Downgrade box in Asus Update settings. Maybe this feature has been removed.. worth a try.

If your cpu is aligned with the two small tabs and you can slightly jiggle the cpu within the socket (you can kinda feel the pins scratch against the cpu). Then you should be fine.
