That's kinda interesting. Maybe a chemical reaction from an adhesive used when the cap is soldered in place? Perhaps the cap is held by four suction cups or adhesive feet at some point.

    I haven't...

You're totally right, but somewhere along the line, all this can't just be bullsh*t. I just don't think the vast majority of drives are able to live to the point where read-only/write protect modes...

After a long vacation, I'm back on the scene.

I was actually running another drive in the rig when the 830 died. That drive died two weeks later. What was it, you ask? It was a 120GB 840. I...

    I won't argue with that!

But here in the states, the 830 is getting harder to find at such economical prices. I think the 830, while slower, isn't noticably outclassed by the 840 Pro.

It's cool that Mr. Vatto gave the 830 a shout out, but it actually has 5,850TiB on it at the moment, not the almost 5,000TiB he mentions.

There is a problem with some 840s and LBA writes ; right now, F1 won't increment past 2.04TB and may reset with power cycles. It's hardly a big deal, so if you see it, don't think you're going crazy.
