Yea you could buy a custom unit from someone that can build a good performing unit for you. Though in my mind the fun about phase-change is the building process, but everyone doesn't share these...
The thing most of are missing here is that window a/c's aren't that common in europe because of the climate here. Other than that they are a very good source of parts :)

Well, i have built several units before but they have been like beer-coolers and such and one that i had in mind to be using in my computer but that was a long time ago and i brazed the captube shut...
The choice of gas depends on what temperatures you are shooting for..
If low (-40 or so) then you would want R404a or R507, if you are in the US you could use R402a and such that have a bit lower...
Rotary's are kinda easy to find here too, i think they are easy to find everywhere in our little world, almost every ac/heatpump unit uses them.

You could use Acetylene/Air instead :). I would go with a Propane/Oxygen set, safer if you are a beginner and almost as good :).

Wouldn't it be possible to just use an ordinary compressor and then attach a oilseperator to it? I think i might do that in the future, recovery units are very expensive here in sweden :(.
