it does give a very even result if you just make sure the opacity is the same throughout the cpu. If you go in gentle circles it spreads very thin and very evenly.

try running the XT at stock 9800pro clocks and see if that helps. Just to check if its the OC that is screwing up.
the core may be the same but the PCB may be totally different. So post pics of the PCB. I haven't heard of any such mods but hey you never know until you try.
I think the bottom of the stacker is much bigger than the LS so there may be some balance issues. Also I think the LS hose is just barely long enough to reach the cpu given the height of the stacker.
