I don't think it matters if you can saturate lightpeak with current systems, I think it's more about building systems with the future in mind. This is probably why Apple is skipping USB 3 altogether.

What make and model video card do you have? In my experience, OSX does not do plug and play hardware detection for video cards on hackintosh'ed systems, you need to specify that in your bootloader.

Is your computer capable of booting from usb disc? You could restore that disc image to a usb drive, flag it bootable and boot the installation from that.
