Well it does not have a integrated GPU but it does offer 1080P playback something the Intel Atom 2 does not offer "Max it officially offers is 480P" other than that i think this will perform more like the Atom 330 and can be a big headache for intel if Atom general performance does not change with Pine Trail platform.

Just got to love these guys. <3

I love VIA!

I truly miss their chipsets also.

I remember them showing off their Nano playing Crysis with a 8600gt :D

I understand that's just a part of the first paragraph, but why don't you
quote the whole first paragraph instead of cutting the words at the end
in two so as to not be able to figure it out?
Thanks

I mean: +1.

Go VIA!

highoctane 11-03-2009 09:36 AM

What would be great is if out of the blue VIA just dropped a bomb on the industry with something on par with Intel and AMD mainstream parts, that would be trippy!!

Smartidiot89 11-03-2009 09:41 AM

Does VIA own their own fabs? Just thinking out loud since they are still using 65nm and even 90nm on certain products...

Wouldn't it be good if they jumped over and made a deal with TSMC, GlobalFoundries? I think both AMD and Intel could have a fierce enemy with VIAs low-power architectures, especially on a lower process tech

Couldn't they just make a dual core version of the Nano and get GlobalFoundries to make it on 45nm or something (if they are allowed to do so)? That should bring really nice performance and hopefully keep the power levels down well enough.

Edit - Smartidiot89 beat me to it

First thought: But it's only a single core, only good for surfing & solitaire... :(

Second thought: Hold on! It's a single core that can run 1080p :yepp:

It's tempting enough that I could buy one, but I'd like to see some reviews. Would like to know if it's enough for some laptop gaming, how good did it run crysis? anyone?

Nedjo 11-03-2009 10:30 AM

0.5W W @ idle... nice!

0.1W idle for the low-end ones ;)

Also VIA makes awesome chipsets which easily can run 1080p while maintaining a low power draw while keeping the CPU at a very low utilization. I so wish VIA was abit bigger than it is today:shakes:

I know what you mean.

I wish they were able to compete with Intel and AMD :(

FischOderAal 11-03-2009 11:48 AM

The Nano looked very promising, too bad it's not very often used. I really hope for VIA that this changes now.

Nope, they're fabless.

Oh really? Who has their fabs? If they are fabless why are they still on 90nm and 65nm on their products?

apt403 11-03-2009 12:20 PM

IBM has done fab work for VIA in the past, not sure if they still do. VIA's based in Taiwan, so maybe TMSC?

FischOderAal 11-03-2009 12:27 PM

Dunno where they are manufacturing. IIrc the last VIA processor was made by Toshiba?! Could be mistaken though. What's wrong with chipsets at 65 nm? Intel doesn't use the smallest structures for its chips as well.

vias last gen eden matched the low end single core atoms, and decoded 1080p u just could not get them in the US

Fujitsu was producing CPUs for VIA...

Wow, didn't expect this much love for VIA on xs, a nice surprise.

.1w idle is awesome for something like this, good to see that VIA is still making progress.

VIA totally owns with their chipsets at the HTPC department, I was more thinking of their CPUs, those could use a shrink(or 2)?

You miss their chipsets? Everything after KT266A was pretty much garbage

ajaidev 11-03-2009 09:55 PM

New source and possible bench's added

I went to UT Austin for grad school, and every game day my two favorite times are the Longhorns and who ever plays the Sooners. I think you are seeing a little of the latter :)

Calmatory 11-04-2009 03:32 AM

VIA doesn't have too many engineers working on the architectures. Thats why it is quite hard for them to spit out the dual core versions of their chips at pace of AMD/Intel. Also partly the reason why it is harder for them to shrink down their chips.
