ATI Radeon HD 5950 = Radeon HD 5870 With Six DisplayPort Connections

Bad news guys, NO DUAL GPU 5950. I had a bad feeling about this one, as I couldn't really think of how they would have been able to make a 5950 with lower specs than 5970. The 5970 is already cut down more than we would of really liked, and as it seems there is nowhere else to fit a downsized dual gpu 5950.

The first benchmarks of AMD's upcoming HD 5970 graphics card with two GPUs have emerged. It is also clear that the second video card in the 5900 series, HD 5950, HD 5870 with a six-port outputs will display.

There is quite some confusion about the video card Hemlock, Cypress, two GPUs on board will have. Having previously announced that the video card called HD 5970 will come out instead of HD 5870 X2. In the 5900-series graphics cards, two to appear. An anonymous source reported to Tweakers.net to know that the HD 5950 HD 5870 is actually one, but with six mini-display port outputs. The card was previously known as the six-edition. When this card is released and for what price is not yet known.

That's an odd naming scheme...

lkiller123 11-02-2009 11:59 PM

Isn't that the Eye-finity?
Or else, it's definitely a FAIL naming scheme.

A mountain of salt. This has 0 substance, lets wait till AMD officially announce it before we start bashing them.

Hahaha ;)

zalbard 11-03-2009 02:50 AM

Hope it's not true.

Anemic 11-03-2009 02:56 AM

Seems very odd sine they made two dual cards in the 3000 and 4000 series...Well, I hope it's fake!

I agree with his statement. Also, AMD was decent enough to change the name early in it's life cycle, and not a year after it was released like it's competitor.

Six DisplayPort alone doesnt a Radeon HD 5950 make...if a 5950 at all then prolly with 900-100mhz and/or 2Gigs of memory

Exactly. The OP is total bs.

ajaidev 11-03-2009 05:53 AM

5950 should be priced near the 5970 than the 5870, but if its this with a name change people will be pissed at that price. Hope the 5950 is not a 5870 with 6 outs

saaya 11-03-2009 06:03 AM

i say :bs:

the article is full of fail
5970 ill be priced at 500$ according to them, no freaking way they would do that

annihilat0r 11-03-2009 07:35 AM

I don't think there will ever be a 5950. If there is going to be one, it won't be dual gpu, it'll be either something like the OP or a single GPU with a faster clock like 4890 was to 4870.

Ozzfest05 11-03-2009 07:45 AM

If its true the 5950 will be clock like a beast 1000 core and have 2 gigs of gddr5 oh yeah and the 6 video outputs , 5950 - 5870 as 4890-4870 type deal.
Cool

Cool

why would going from 4870 to 4890 with the 5xxx cards not use the same naming scheme?

everything in the 4800 started with 800 SP
everything in the 5800 started with 1600

they would just call it a 5890, the 5950 would have to be a new core, like 2000SPs (probably still capable of getting the same clocks as a 5870, possibly a little better) and certainly would need to up the ram bandwidth or would be a total waste.

tajoh111 11-03-2009 08:57 AM

the dual 5850 makes no sense with the current pricing scheme unless the 5970 is $599.

There is no room for a 5970 and 5950 at 400-500 dolllars, especially when the 5870 is 389. If the 5850 was 449 dollars. It would cannibalize 5870 sales and possible 5970 sales.
The only pricing that makes sense at this point with NV at no show at this point is. 389 for the 5870, 499 for the 5950 and 599 for the 5970. The specs of the 5950 have to be heavily crippled to for it to perform significantly different than the 5970.

Or the article is true and the 5850x2 was canceled which would actually make alot of sense

Helloworld_98 11-03-2009 09:01 AM

OMG you guys just can't let go!

just because a load of rumours said the dual R870 card is the 5900 series doesn't make it so, like how loads of people believed the Earth was flat and it isn't so.

my guess would be the 5900's are just 1GHz+ R870's and 2 or 4GB of 5 to 6 GHz memory and the six outputs, maybe with some awesome drivers to go with.

G0ldBr1ck 11-03-2009 09:09 AM

I dont believe this at all for a second. Fail!

gOJDO 11-03-2009 10:08 AM
